Ear infection
1. Ear infections are the most common reason parents bring their
child to a doctor. Three out of four children will have at least one
ear infection by their third birthday. Adults can also get ear
infections, but they are less common. The infection usually
affects the middle ear and is called otitis media. An ear infection
is caused by a bacterium or virus in the middle ear. This infection
often results from another illness — cold, flu or allergy — that
causes congestion and swelling of the nasal passages, throat and
eustachian tubes. High fever, severe pain, or other signs of
complications should warrant immediate attention by a medical
professional. Parents of infants should contact their doctor
immediately if they have any fever, regardless other symptoms.
