                        Project Outline
                                                    Managing waste and sanita-
                                                    tion de-centrally in “PPP”
                                                    platform, is conceived as new
                                                    way of creating employment
                                                    whereby Public Private Part-
                                                    nerships will help the Local
                                                    Authorities to cope with the
                                                    challenge of service provision.

                                                    It is a GIZ (Germany Embas-
                                                    sy) funded pilot project in
                                                    Mzuzu at Luwinga Area 1B.
                                                    Market, in collaboration with
                                                    Mzuzu City Council, Mzuzu
                                                    University, and design by
“Profit from Waste” is an initiative aimed at help- 4th Architectural Dimension.
ing local communities manage their waste while
generating income from the same.

Project Facility

Restaurant, Public pay toilets and showers is located next to a produce market
which operate by use of Bio-Energy “Methane Gas”. The facility is centred on the
operation of a biogas digester. The site may be used for additional communal us-
es, such as child care and communal gatherings.
Organic waste from the market, from households, and from the pay toilets is di-
 gested in the biogas reactor.
Bio-gas produced from the system would be used as a source of energy for cook-
 ing (separate restaurant business at same location) and/or heating (water of pub-
 lic showers).
Grey water from showers is treated separate through small reed bed, and efflu-
 ent may be used for irrigation.
Facility should have solar hot water heating if biogas is not used for heating.
Simple solar photovoltaic for lighting (without need of inverter) with use of Ener-
 gy Server Bulbs.

                           SYSTEM OPERATION OUTLINE

Project Facility

   Covered waste segregation site, where non-biodegradable materials are separated
    for recycling.
   Waste delivered from households to site, through incentive program i.e., for pay-
    ment of money or token for the use for public facilities.

Project Construction Theme
The project is using sustainable construction material through the use of com-
 pressed earth blocks. ( Soil Stabilised Blocks)

   Rain water harvesting for the use in vegetable garden and toilet flushing, which,
    however needs support from piped water as backup in dry season.

   Facility should have renewable energy sources; solar power lighting and water heat-
    ing and biogas for cooking.
