2. Century Gothic was heavily influenced by Sol
Hess’s face type 20thCentury. The Monotype
staff decided to enlarge the x-height of 20th
Century and call their font Century Gothic.
Twentieth Century was drawn by Sol Hess
between 1936 and 1947. It was influenced by
the geometric style sans serif faces that were
popular during the 20’s and 30’s.

3. The purpose of Century Gothic
was to modify 20thCentury to
ensure satisfactory output from
modern digital systems. It has
been veryuseful for advertizing,
newspaper/magazine headlines,
and generaldisplay work.
