3. NEET 2019 - NTA - New Pattern Or Old?
Impact on NEET
47 Lakh candidates are impacted by NTA.
MHRD had several new plans to be
implemented in NEET, now that a new body
is holding it.
We will discuss here about all the changes
that will happen in NEET due to NTA.
We will also go one step further and discuss
the causes and effects of the whole
exercise.

NTA - What Is It? What Will It Do?
NTA is short for National Testing Agency. It
is a new body that is conducting NEET, JEE
Main, UGC NET, CMAT, GPAT.
Until last year, NEET was conducted by
CBSE.
NTA has been formed so that CBSE can
focus on other academic activities rather
than holding exams and also to ensure
better exam conducting practices.

9. 2.
CHANGES THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO
HAPPEN IN NEET 2019
Now let us take a look at the changes that were
supposed to be implemented, but were rolled back.
aglasem
10. Mode of exam
NTA was supposed to
hold NEET 2019 in
online mode, that is in
computer based test
mode.
Exam frequency
Moreover the exam
was supposed to take
place twice a year -
February and May.
NEET would have been
held in eight sessions
In each attempt, exam
was supposed to be
held in 8 sessions.
aglasem
11. Best of 2 scores would have
led to admission
If NEET was held twice a
year, then candidates could
have taken either Feb or May
exam, or appeared in both.
Best of two scores would
have been used for
admission.
TPCs for NEET 2019 Online
Test
To enable candidates
understand online exam
pattern, NTA was to launch
online tests at Test Practice
Centres.
aglasem
12. WHY IS NTA NOT
IMPLEMENTING
THESE CHANGES?
What went wrong? Why, after announcing so many
changes, were they rolled back?
aglasem
13. The only official explanation given by
MHRD was “The change in the NEET
exam pattern (as against the statement
made on 7th July 2018) which will now
be a single exam in pen-and-paper
mode and in the same number of
languages as has been conducted last
year, is on the request of the
Ministry of Health and Family
Welfare, who wanted the same pattern
followed last year to be maintained”
aglasem
14. However, 3 main reasons
have been cited by news
reports. Let us see what they
are..
aglasem
15. REASONS WHY NTA IS NOT
CONDUCTING NEET 2019 IN ONLINE
MODE TWICE A YEAR
» If NEET is held twice a year, then class 12 students will have to appear for
exams continuously for 2-3 months as they have board exams also.
» If NEET is held online, then rural students will be at a disadvantage.
» If NEET is held in 16 sessions, then NTA would have to create a huge pool
of questions, which would bring down the novelty of the exam and lead to
being easy-to-be-copied by coaching centres.

16. THE NEET 2019
CHAIN OF EVENTS
Here is the complete chain of
events that led to final changes
in NEET 2019.
aglasem
17. Nov 10, 2017
Union Cabinet approves
the creation of National
Testing Agency (NTA).
Jul 07, 2018
MHRD Minister
Prakash Javadekar
announces that
NTA will hold NEET
2019 twice a year in
online mode.
Aug 21, 2018
MHRD announces that
MOHFW has asked them to
hold NEET 2019 in the same
pattern as last time. Thus,
all the changes in NEET are
rolled back.
aglasem
18. What does this mean to NEET aspirants?
NEET 2019 aspirants, that is those students who wish to get MBBS/BDS admission in
academic session 2019-20 should prepare for an offline paper, that will be once a year. So
basically all that happened in 2018 will happen in 2019.
However, those who are preparing for NEET 2020, that is class 11 students, should
simultaneously prepare for online exams. MHRD may, in consultation with concerned bodies,
hold an online exam twice a year from 2020.
