time.

♦ Faculty Coordination
Course instructors are responsible for notifying their faculty of any schedule changes and also
promptly advising ASCRS of faculty changes.
♦ Course Handouts
Course instructors are expected to prepare high-quality handouts to accompany their curriculum
and ensure that handouts are available to all participants. Handouts are a valuable part of the
learning experience; they give course participants a written overview of the course subject matter
and can provide detailed additional information that may not have been covered because of time
restrictions. Handouts must adhere to ASCRS guidelines regarding impartiality, scientific
integrity, and valid clinical content. Corporate materials are prohibited.

You will be unable to upload documents with any other format (this includes

necessary software to convert the file to this format, you may create an account with
Adobe.com and create PDF’s for free.

Option 2: Traditional paper handouts

attendees, and some popular courses will be standing-room only.
ASCRS staff will not accept or deliver handout copies.
♦ Course Evaluations
All attendees will have an opportunity to rate the quality of courses and course instructors on their
CME Evaluation Form. The ASCRS Program Committee reviews these evaluations when
planning the following year’s meeting. Evaluation results will be provided in July. Instructors
should remind attendees at the beginning of the course to fill out the course evaluation on the
CME form. A poor overall evaluation or low evaluation response rate is cause for rejection of a
course the following year.
PROGRAM GUIDELINES
♦ Financial Interest Disclosure: As primary author/instructor, you provided a complete listing of all

Symposium on Cataract, IOL, and Refractive Surgery ♦ Boston, MA ♦ April 9–14, 2010
♦ Objectives: The educational objectives of the Symposium & Congress are that ophthalmologists will
be able to summarize, assess, analyze, and evaluate the latest developments for the management of
multiple ocular conditions within the various ophthalmology specialties; Identify complicating factors
in anterior segment surgery and develop appropriate treatment plans to address the factors pre-, peri-
and post-operatively; Formulate current and advanced treatment strategies with corresponding ocular
conditions, including: anterior segment and refractive surgery, glaucoma and retinal conditions;
Compare and contrast ophthalmic pharmaceuticals and devices; Integrate prescribed medical and
surgical treatment options into everyday practice; Examine external legislative and internal practice
issues impacting the field of ophthalmology; Understand basic and complex practice management
issues and integrate improvements in processes within their practices. Your presentation is an
important part of this learning experience.
♦ Scientific Integrity: Please keep in mind that all presentations should be free of commercial bias.
The use of generic names will contribute to this impartiality. If trade names must be used, be sure to
provide objective, scientific information with a balanced view of treatment options. Faculty members
are urged to adopt a consistent treatment of products throughout their presentations (e.g., if a trade
name is used, the competitor’s trade names must also be used).
♦ Validation of Clinical Content per ACCME Guidelines: Faculty members are reminded of the
following:
• All recommendations involving clinical medicine in this CME activity must be based on
evidence that is accepted within the profession.
• All scientific research referred to, reported, or used in this CME activity must conform to
the generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection, and analysis.
• Recommendations, treatments, or manners of practicing medicine that do not comply with
the above, are known to have risks or dangers that outweigh the benefits, or are known to
be ineffective in the treatment of patients should not be presented as part of this CME
activity.
♦ Disclosure of Unapproved/Off-Label Use: If your course concerns the use of a drug or device
that has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or concerns an off-
label use of a drug or device approved by the FDA for other uses, you must disclose that fact
verbally or with a slide during the course.
♦ Adherence to Guidelines: ASCRS will monitor courses for adherence to its guidelines on
impartiality, disclosure, and quality of content. Any complaints received will be investigated by
the ASCRS Program Chairs and the CME Committee. Faculty violating these guidelines will
receive a warning and, at the discretion of the ASCRS Program Chairman and CME Committee,
may be prohibited from participating in future ASCRS-sponsored CME activities.
