So sit back, relax and enjoy the journey.
istock photo usageScriptEmbarking on a JourneyIf we think about anything new that we undertake, it is a bit like a journey. The destination may seem very far away when we start.Often we have a general idea of where our journey will take us. We make a plan and we hope that our plan works out just as we planned it.As we get closer to our destination, it becomes much more in focus and we learn and experience many things along the way. Our journey is going to start in a park. Come join me in the park and I’ll explain why.
istock photo usageScriptCommunity Park MetaphorIn the Fundamentals program we’ll be using a community park metaphor to demonstrate what is involved in planning, building and implementing a wellness program. Follow me as we explore how this metaphor plays out.
istock photo usageScriptOur Community ParkEach of us lives in a community. Whether it is a small rural town, a busy suburb or a thriving city. Every community has a park of some sort. There are many different types of parks. Have you ever thought about why we have parks? Parks make our communities a better place to live. Parks create a supportive environment where people come together to share experiences and fun. Parks create a safer community by having people outside and visible. And parks provide recreational and educational experiences. The park requires ongoing programming to keep it alive. Parks are an inherent part of our community life, no matter where you live. You may have also noticed that no two parks are the same. They may be designed to meet the needs of different groups of people or for different purposes.
istock photo usageScriptMany Steps…At first a park might just be a vacant lot or disused piece of land. Yet someone in the community sees a need and has a vision for how to make this place more vibrant, healthy and to make it an asset for the community. But to make the park vision a reality, takes work. There needs to be a plan, funding, and people need to be involved to make it happen. A planning committee made up of town officials, employees and community volunteers will all participate. It doesn’t happen by itself. It takes the work of a lot of people and a number of steps to bring the park vision to reality. Your community park development project will no doubt have a detailed planning stage. The planning helps the committee to clearly identify goals and objectives for the community park, thus creating a positive experience for park visitors. The three main steps are plan, build, and use.
istock photo usage 1218108ScriptIn the beginning…Someone in your organization has a vision that healthier employees will make for a healthier, high performing company. So the vision begins. To plan, build, and implement your wellness program, you can expect to follow similar steps as we have just reviewed for planning a park.
