2. Why is lab safety important?
Think about and find answers to the
following questions.....
Burns; chemical, heat and cold burns. Think about how someone
could get burnt in the lab.
Cuts; what could cause cuts in the lab?
Inhalation of hot substances or dangerous chemicals; name a
substance that cause cause harm if inhaled.
Falls from running, pushing, leaning on chairs/stools . What type of
behaviour could lead to these accidents happening?
Accidental fires. Name a flammable liquid that is often used in the lab.
3. Science safety rules
Do not enter the lab without a teacher present. Make sure long hair is
tied back and you are wearing closed toe and heel patent shoes. Assess
if you require a lab coat and make sure you wear your protective glasses.
No running or pushing.
Keep you areas tidy and clean. Things like paper burn when in contact
with certain chemicals.
Do not eat or drink in the laboratory.
Do not taste or lick any chemicals or drink from laboratory glassware.
If you cut or burn yourself, or don't feel well, tell your teacher.
4. Science Safety Rules cont...
NEVER look directly inside a beaker, flask or test tube whilst heating or mixing
solutions.
Make sure you clean and dry glassware, wipe down your benches and put rubbish in
the bin, not in the drain or sink.
If a spill or breakage occurs make sure you report it to your teacher to clean up
immediately.
NEVER mix chemicals or do your own experiments unless they are approved by your
teacher.
Make sure you carry out and understand the specific procedures that are to be used
when handling equipment, acid or alkali solutions and disposal of unwanted chemicals.
Wash your hands when entering and leaving the lab, you don't want to potentially
poison yourself!!
