Use the correct ones for
the job you will be doing
Remove gloves before
using instruments,
telephone, and leaving
the laboratory

7. Laboratory hygiene
Do not eat, drink or
smoke in a laboratory
Do not apply
cosmetics
Do not touch your
face, mouth or eyes
Do not suck pens or
chew pencils

8. Glassware Safety
Do not dispose
broken glassware in a
regular trashcan.
When pouring liquids
into glassware, make
sure the container
you are pouring into
is resting on a table
at least a hands
breadth from the
edge.

9. Spillages
Clear up spillage
promptly
Dispose of any
hazardous material as
toxic waste
“Messy workers are
usually poor workers!!”

10. Electrical Hazard
Always do a visual
check on electrical
equipment before
use, look for obvious
wear or defects

11. Waste Disposal
Do not put materials
down the drain or in with
normal waste unless
authorised to do so
Wear appropriate PPE
when handling clinical
waste

12. Chemical Safety
 Always add acid to water
 Pour from large containers
to smaller ones.
 Do not taste any chemical.
 Do not put your nose over
the container and inhale
the fumes.

13. Fire Hazard
Use the smallest
quantities of
flammable solvents
practicable.
Do not use a Bunsen
burner in any area
where flammable
solvents are handled.

14. Risk of Infection
 If exposed to a bio
hazardous specimen:
 Immediately wash the
area with soap and H2O
 Flush splashes to nose,
mouth or skin with H2O
 Irrigate eyes with
clean H2O or saline
 Perform background
tests

Measurements
All readings must be
made with the eye on
level with the
meniscus to avoid
parallax error.

17. Pipetting techniques
Hold the pipet
between the thumb
and forefinger
Do not pipet using
your mouth, use a
rubber aspirator

18. Operating a Centrifuge
Do not remove the
cover of the
centrifuge until it
has come to a
complete stop
Make sure the loads
are balanced

19. Using microscope
Gently wipe the lens
with lens paper or
muslin cloth
Always carry the
microscope with one
hand supporting the
base and the other
hand around the arm.

20. Sharps Hazards
Always use
sterile,disposable
needle
Never recap a needle
Dispose sharps in
puncture-resistant,
leak-proof container

correct order of
draw of tubes and
tube inversion
