4. Introduction
• The CT scanner is the abbreviation of Computed Tomography scan
Computed=> Use of Computer
• Tomography=>Greek word tomos means slice , graphy means write
• Computer tomography is the processor generating a two-dimensional
image of a slice or section through a 3-Dimensional object (a tomogram)
• Computer tomography or Computerized AxialTomography is an
examination that uses X-ray and computer to obtain a cross-sectional image
of the human body
5. History
•The first commercial CT Scanner was invented
by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield in UK using X-rays .
•The first Patient brain-scan was done on 1-
October 1971
6. Construction of CT Scan
• CT scan is ideal for any type of skeletal
injuries. If there are bone injuries in the
head, spine or Chest then CT Scan is the best
way to identify the problem.
• X- ray images are taken from different angles.
• CT Scan combines X-ray imaging and
computer technique to overcome the draw
back of X-ray Photography technique.
• Parts of a CT Scan:
• 1.Gantry (Scanner System)
• 2.Patient Table
• 3.Computer(Operation Control)
8. Working Procedure of CT Scan
1.High Voltage supply drive the X-ray tube that can be mechanically
rotated along the circumference of a gantry.
2.Patient is lying in a tube in the centre of gantry.
3.The X-ray passes through the patient and produces an image on
detectors. Which are fixed in a place around the circumference of
the gantry in a large quantity.
5.Microcomputer sense the position of tube in the gantry and
samples the output of the detector scanner which is opposite to the
X-ray tube.
6.A calculator based on the data of a computer scan of the tube is
made by the computer.
6.The o/p unit then produces a visible image of transverse plane
cross the section of patient.
7.Output may be displayed on the cathode ray tube or
photographed with a camera to produce a hard copy record.
9. Detector operation and construction:
• Detector consists of ionization chamber filled with gas
such as xenon , sealed at both ends and having two
conductors forming a capacitor on the sides.
• A high DC voltage is applied to the to the capacitors
an x-ray entry. The chamber and Ionizes the xenon
item causing it to migrate to capacitor plate and
causing a current in the high-voltage load.
• This current is proportional to the radiation and is fed
to the computer as data for computing the image.
• The advanced model of CT scanner create the image
at an angle other than 90o by the tilting the gantry
10. Applications
• Its major applications in medical field ,it is used to detect the injury in the human brain.
• It is used to detect Inner Wounds.
• It is also used to scan
Soft tissues
The Pelvis
Blood Vessels
Lungs
Abdomen
bones
• Dis Advantages:
• There is a Chance to develop Cancer 1 in 2000 .
• Pregnant and breast feeding women are avoided.
• Claustrophobia patients should be avoided
