Course 2 – Substitution & Identification
Class Facilitator, Ann M. Chealey
Welcome!
In this Semester we will
cover the following:
• Both the Old & New
Testament points us to
Christ & the Cross
• Week 1 & 2 – Substitution
& Identification
• Week 3 & 4 – Doctrine of
Faith Relating to the Cross
• Week 5 & 6 – Kingdom of
God 101
The Focus of the Bible is the
“Message of the Cross”
There were many precious items
that was used in the Tabernacle.
Everything had to be
consecrated, cleaned, and the
animals that were used for
sacrifices, had to be spotless,
without defects.
This lets us now how precious the
Blood of Christ is! His life was a
great sacrifice, because as a
man, He had to live a spotless life.
Even though He was God, He
had to live as a man. So, His living
was uncompromisable, and His
sacrifice is undeniable. No
greater sacrifice that has ever
been made, than the one that
Jesus made of His life.
Semester I: Course 2
Lesson I: Substitution
The Doctrine of the Cross of Christ is the first and foremost doctrine of the complete Plan of Redemption. As
we go through these courses, please keep in mind the following, which is God’s prescribed order of victory:
1. FOCUS: The Lord Jesus Christ (John 14:6)
2. OBJECT OF FAITH: The Cross of Christ (Romans 6:1-14; Gal. 2:20-21).
3. POWER SOURCE: The Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:1-2, 11).
4. RESULTS: Victory (Rom. 6:14)
Now, I want you to take a minute to think about today’s church, the message that the church is pre-dominantly
preaching, the souls that are not being saved, the bondages that are not being broken, miracles that are not
taken place in today’s church vs the operation of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament church. Have you took
your minute? If you look at the overall condition of today’s church, you will understand the importance of the
formula I previously mentioned above, and why the formula below is what the church is using, and why it is
NOT God’s prescribed order of victory.
1. FOCUS: Works
2. OBJECT OF FAITH: Our Performance
3. POWER SOURCE: Self
4. RESULTS: Failure
As we go through these lessons, it will become more evident to you, as to why the Doctrine of the Cross of
Christ is forever important.
In the Old Testament, under the Levitical system, the priests handled the offerings that were offered to the
Lord, on the behalf of the sinner. Under the old covenant, there were 5 different offerings that were used to
cover the sins of the offender. We want to take a brief look at the Levitical system, because it emphasizes the
significance of Christ and the Cross.
In the Old Testament, The Levitical (Sacrificial) System there were 5 offerings that God set in place for a sinner
to come and offer unto Him, as a sacrifice to take the penalty of his/her sin. The 5 offerings that God allowed
were:
• WHOLE BURNT OFFERING
• THE MEAT OFFERING
• THE PEACE OFFERING
• THE SIN OFFERING
• THE TRESPASS OFFERING
These five offerings, were offerings that used a sacrifice (ex. Lamb, bullock, ram, goat, dove, pigeon,
vegetable, grain) that was without spot or blemish, and perfect in nature.
WHOLE BURNT OFFERING, with this offering, the entire animal was burned on the altar, with the exception of the
skin, which was given to the priests. It signified God was giving His all and, in turn, would satisfy the demands of
God, who was greatly offended.
MEAT OFFERING, was an offering of thanksgiving and contained no flesh. It almost always accompanied the
whole burnt offering. Some of this offering was burned on the altar, with another part given to the priests. As
well, the word meat, as it was used in Bible times, referred to all types of food, but not flesh. At the present, it
refers only to the flesh.
THE SIN OFFERING, is linked to the stages of our Christian growth. When we start out with the Lord, there are
many things we still need to learn. In fact, we commit sins of ignorance, or to say it better, we sin at times
simply because we do not know or understand God’s prescribed order of victory.
THE TRESPASS OFFERING, as the sin offering pertains to our Christian growth, the trespass offering relates to our
Christian walk. This offering pertains more so to our sinning against our brother or sister in the Lord than anything
else.
THE PEACE OFFERING, in offering up the other sacrifices, with the exception of the meat offering, most of the
time, a peace offering would follow, meaning that the problem had been addressed, and the peace of God
was now resident within the believer’s heart.
With this offering, the entire animal was burned on the altar, with the exception of the skin, which was given to the priests. It signified
God was giving His all and, in turn, would satisfy the demands of God, who was greatly offended. This offering set the standard and
suggested the themes which are manifested by all the other Levitical offerings. It is a biblical type in the fullest sense of the word. The
animal was a substitute in the place of the offerer, symbolizing Christ, who was our substitute as well. In other words, God doesn’t look
so much at us as He does the object of our faith. If the object of our faith is anything other than Christ and the Cross, then it is rejected.
Considering that there has been so little preaching and teaching on the Cross in the last several decades, this means that much of the
efforts of Christian mankind are rejected by the Lord. The only thing that God will accept is the crucified Christ. Paul said, “But God
forbid that I should glory (boast) save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the
world” (Gal 6:14).
Of all the things that Jesus did in His Incarnation, the real purpose for His becoming man was to go to the Cross. The Cross was
ever His destination. This means that it was not an accident, and incident, an assassination, or execution. His death on the Cross of
Calvary was a sacrifice! When He was placed on the Cross, He was perfect in every respect; therefore, God accepted His poured out life
in the shedding of His precious blood as payment for all the sin of mankind- past, present, and future- at least for all who will believe
(John 3:16; Eph 2:13-18).
Under the old covenant, when the offering was tendered, the worshipper- imperfect and sinful in himself- was accepted in the
perfection of the offering. That is extremely important, and it has not changed to this moment. When the believing sinner places his or
her faith exclusively in Christ and what Christ has done at the Cross, the Lord accepts that person on the basis of the perfect sacrifice of
Christ and the person’s faith in Christ. In other words, in the sacrifices under the Mosaic Law, the priest didn’t even really look at the
sinner; he looked at the sacrifice. If the sacrifice was acceptable, then the believing sinner was acceptable as well. It has not changed
from then until now. Therefore, the conscience of the offerer, being a reflection of the sacrifice, remained imperfect as well. And yet, at
the same time, the sacrifice of Christ being perfect gives a perfected conscience and, therefore, a peace that nothing can destroy. That’s
the difference in the Mosaic sacrificial system and the perfect system under Christ. All of the old Levitical system was meant only to
serve as a stopgap measure until the reality could come.
Offering 1: WHOLE BURNT OFFERING.
Paul said, “But now (since the Cross) has He (the Lord Jesus) obtained a more excellent ministry (the New Covenant in Jesus’blood
is superior, and takes the place of the Old Covenant in animal blood), but how much also He is the Mediator of a better covenant
(proclaims the fact that Christ officiates between God and man according to the arrangements of the New Covenant), which was
established upon better promises. (This presents the New Covenant explicitly based on the cleansing and forgiveness of all sin, which
the Old Covenant could not do.)
“For if that first covenant had been faultless (proclaims the fact that the first covenant was definitely not faultless; as stated, it was
based on animal blood, which was vastly inferior to the precious blood of Christ), then should no place have been sought for the
second (proclaims the necessity of the New Covenant)” (Heb. 8:6-7). Without proper sacrifice, and again we refer to Christ, there can be
no forgiveness. Christianity basis of forgiveness is centered around the atonement of Christ.
This was an offering of thanksgiving and contained no flesh. It almost always accompanied the whole burnt offering.
Some of this offering was burned on the altar, with another part given to the priests. As well, the word meat, as it was
used in Bible times, referred to all types of food, but not flesh. At the present, it refers only to the flesh: AND WHEN
ANY will offer a meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and
put frankincense thereon” (Lev. 2:1) As previously stated, in Bible times, meat just simply referred to food, mostly
grains, which, of course, contains no flesh. In our interpretation presently, this offering could be labeled a food offering
or a meal offering. The Hebrew word for meat is minchah, and means “a gift made by an inferior to a superior.” It
actually was a gratitude or thanksgiving offering.
While all of it refers to Christ, it does so in a different way. For instance, as the burnt offering typified Christ in
death, the meat offering typified Him in life. This is very important when one considers that many do not properly
understand Christ, Substitution and Identification, and more so do not understand the Incarnation, i.e., God becoming
man. The entire Levitical system was appointed by God, to point to the life of Christ, His humanity, life, living and
walk.
From the beginning, Satan has diligently sought to lead people astray from this truth. As someone has well said, if a
person could find on this earth the individual whom they think is the godliest, the kindest, the most Christlike, the one in
whom the fruit of the Spirit functions to the greatest degree, upon close association with that individual, whomever they
might be, one would quickly see the faults, flaws and imperfections. The longer one stayed around that person, again,
whomever that person might be, the more faults and flaws one would observe; however, the closer we get to Christ, the
very opposite result is to be found. His perfection becomes event greater perfection, if such is possible. His attributes and
qualities are enlarged upon the closer that we inspect the Man from galilee.
Offering 2: MEAT OFFERING.
There has always been much discussion about Christ, concerning the question as to whether He
could have sinned or not. Many take the position that inasmuch as He was God as well as man, in
effect, the God-Man, Jesus Christ, He could not sin because God can’t sin. While it is certainly
true that Jesus Christ was God, never ceased to be God, and, in fact, will always be God, still,
when He became man, He forever laid aside the expression of His deity while, at the same time,
retaining possession of His deity. In other words, even though He definitely is God, He functioned
as a man. Jesus grew hungry, thirsty, and tired, which are all characteristics of the flesh. We know
that God cannot get hungry, thirsty, or tired! So, we must come back to the position that even
though Jesus is God, and always will be God due to the incarnation, He now functions as a man
(Zech. 12:10; 13:6) We will come back to this topic later on…
“And he shall bring it to Aaron’s sons the priests: and he shall take thereout his handful
of the flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall
burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the
Lord: And the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons: it is a thing most holy of
the offerings of the Lord made by fire” (Lev. 2:2-3).
According to the Pulpit Commentary, for every handful of flour burnt on the altar, nearly a gallon
went to the priests. They had to eat it within the precincts of the tabernacle, as was the case with
all food that was most holy. This included the shewbread, and the flesh of the sin offering and of
the trespass offering (Lev. 10:12). However, when the priests personally offered meat offerings, it
was all wholly burnt, with none kept for themselves (Lev 6:23).
MEAT OFFERING: JESUS AS GOD and MAN.
The word memorial served a twofold purpose:. It pertained to the believer not failing to remember what
the Lord has done for him, especially what Jesus has done for us. As well, it pertained to the fact that God
will not forget His promises. The Psalmist said, “Remember all your offerings, and accept your burnt
sacrifice” (Psalm 20:3)
The greatest promise that God made, and in which the meat offering was a type, was that He would
send a Redeemer into the world to lift man out of this darkness. This one sent would be the perfect one.
Moses wrote all of this down in the Pentateuch (the five books of the Law). This offering was a sweet savour
to the Lord, not so much because of the offering, but rather what, or more particularly, who it represented. It
typified Christ in His perfection. In all of our doing, we must present Christ! In all of our believing, we must
believe Christ! Nothing must come between us and Christ, and nothing must take the place of Christ. We can
not offer anything else to the Lord that He will accept, except Christ!
The meat offerings are mentioned after the burnt offerings. This means that all which pertained to the
meat offerings are predicated on the burnt offering, which typified the Cross and what Jesus did there to
appease the wrath of God (Substitution). Only the spotless Lamb of God could pay the price, and the meat
offering proclaimed the purity of Christ, in fact, a perfect purity. There were several ways that the offering
could be prepared, and instructions were given for each method. God has a certain way that He has already
established for us to come to Him, to receive justification, and that’s by faith, keeping our faith daily in the
finished work of Jesus Christ. There is no other method that we can obtain justification from God, and
atonement for our sins, and receive complete victory. “Therefore being Justified by Faith we have peace with
God through our Lord Jesus Christ. By Whom also we have access by Faith into this Grace wherein we stand,
and rejoice in hope of the Glory of God (Rom 5:1-2). Every person should ever be directed to the Cross,
whether the sinner being saved or the saint being righteous. All are tied to the Cross, and the Cross alone!
The Resurrection was a foregone conclusion in that Jesus atoned for all sin.
THE MEMORIAL.
“No meat offering, which you shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven: for you shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any
offering of the Lord made by fire.
“As for the oblation of the first fruits, you shall offer them unto the LORD: but they shall not be burnt on the altar for a sweet
savour” (Lev 2:11-12).Why was there no honey in this offering? Honey, as leaven, can go into fermentation, as well; however, there is an
added thought respecting honey. Honey, as given here, represents all natural good, or at least that which man labels as good, which is
in man outside of Christ. It would have something to do with the good part of theTree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, with all of that
tree being forbidden (Gene 2:17). In fact, this good is not only the greatest problem of the unredeemed, it so happens to be the greatest
problem of the redeemed as well! The unredeemed man thinks that his good will save him, which it won’t! Regrettably, the redeemed
man often tries to live for God by the means of his so-called goodness. However, let it be understood that this particular good, whether
in the unredeemed or the redeemed cannot be accepted at all by God.This is why we see in today’s churches, the new focus is
community outreach. Most of these community outreach programs, or called ministries is not ministry that God will recognize or
accept, because the focus has become works, and not the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the only means of salvation,
sanctification and justification for mankind.
The meat offering, as stated, typified the spotless, pure, perfect, and uncorrupted life of the Lord
Lord Jesus Christ. We make a great mistake when we look at that particular life and then try to imitate it
imitate it by our own strength and ability. It cannot be done that way! The only way that His perfect life
life can be ours, and the only way it is meant to be ours, is by and through what Christ did for us at the
the Cross. “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life
which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me”
(Gal 2:20). Again, we are justified by faith, not of works, lest any man should boast. “For by grace are you
you Saved through Faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should
boast” (Eph 2:8-9).
When the scripture speaks of our having fellowship with Christ’s sufferings, it refers simply to His
NO HONEY: JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH OR WORKS
“AND IF HIS oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offer it of the herd; whether it be a
male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the Lord” (Lev 3:1).
Concerning the peace offering, Mackintosh said: “There is none of the offerings in
which the communion of the worshipper so fully unfolded as in the ‘peace offering.’ In
the ‘burnt offering,’ it is Christ offering Himself to God. In the ‘meat offering,’ we have
Christ’s perfect humanity. Then, passing on to the ‘sin offering,’ we learn that sin, in its
root, is fully met. In the ‘trespass offering,’ there is a full answer to the actual sins. But in
none is the doctrine of the communion of the worshipper unfolded. This latter belongs to
the ‘peace offering.’’’
In both the peace offering and the trespass offering, we learn of the presence of
the sin nature in the heart and life of the believer. However, we find out even more fully in
the peace offering that even though the sin nature dwells in us, it is Not to rule in us. Christ
was the perfect substitution for us. He bored our sicknesses and iniquities to Calvary’s
Cross, and gave us His righteousness. Paul addressed this directly by saying, “Let not sin
(the sin nature) therefore reign (rule) in your mortal body, that you should obey it in the
lusts thereof” (Rom. 6:12). Where there no sin nature, there would have been no need for
the peace or the trespass offering.
The more closely we view these offerings, the more fully we see the necessity of the
five offerings in order that Christ be properly portrayed as it regards His finished work. The
peace offering portrays communion with God and the believer’s place and position in
Christ, due to what Christ has done for us at the Cross. It was the only offering in which the
offerer could partake, which signified that peace had now been restored.
Offering 3: PEACE OFFERING
When the individual brought his animals for sacrifice, as he generally brought two, one would be for the peace
offering. After the burnt, sin, or trespass offering had been presented, which was followed by the meat offering, it
was now time for the peace offering. He would then “lay his hand upon the head of his offering,” which
portrayed the beautiful doctrine of substitution and identification. The animal became the substitute in the
sinner’s place, and by the laying of his hand or hands on the head of his offering, he identified with that substitute.
That, in effect, is the heart of the Gospel. Christ became our substitute, and we identify with Him in all He did, but
more particularly, what He did for us at the Cross. Rom. 6:1-10 says the following,
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that Grace may abound? (Just because Grace is greater
than sin doesn’t mean that the Believer has a license to sin.) 2 God forbid. How shall we, who are dead to sin, live
any longer therein? 3 Know you not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His
death? (I Cor.12:13; Gal. 3:27; Eph. 4:5; Col. 2:11-13) When Christ died on the Cross, in the mind of God, we died
with Him; He became our Substitute, and our Identification with Him in His death gives us all the benefits for which
He died; the idea is that He did it all for us! This is why Faith in the Cross is evidently forever of the greatest
importance. 4 Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the
dead by the Glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted
together in the likeness of His Death (Paul proclaims the Cross as the instrument through which all Blessings come;
consequently, the Cross must ever be the Object of our Faith, which gives the Holy Spirit latitude to work within our
lives), we shall also be in the likeness of His Resurrection: (We can have Resurrection life, as long as we
understand the “likeness of His Death”, which refers to the Cross as the Means by which all of this is done.)
6 Knowing this, that our old man is Crucified with Him (all that we were before conversion), that the body of sin
might be destroyed that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he who is dead (He was our substitute, and in
the mind of God, we died with Him upon believing Faith) is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ (once
again pertains to the Cross, and our being Baptized into His death), we believe that we shall also live with Him
(have Resurrection Life, which is more Abundant Life, Jn. 10:10).
PEACE OFFERING: THE DOCTRINE OF SUBSTITUTION & IDENTIFICATION.
It is always by faith. This refers to the fact that Identification cannot be made with Christ by works, but only by faith,
To properly understand faith, at least that which is given to us in the Word of God, we must understand the object of
faith. Every human being in the world has faith, but only a small portion have the right kind of faith. This refers to the
correct object of faith, which is Jesus Christ and Him crucified (I Cor. 1:17-18, 21, 23; 2:2). The phrase, Jesus Christ and
Him crucified, sums up the entirety of the Word of God all the way from Genesis 1:1 through Revelation 22:21.
So as it regards the nonspiritual kind of faith, and even the spiritual kind that is not anchored in Christ and Him
crucified, it is not recognized by God. Therefore, when we speak of faith, we must always understand that it’s faith in
Christ and His Cross. We must understand, that all true believers are seated with Him, spiritually speaking (Eph. 2:6)
This should help us to understand even further, why so many confessing Christians (believers) are bound by some
type of sin, struggle, weight, issue, because the Cross and the revelation of the Cross is not being taught, nor preached in
today’s churches. The Cross of Christ, Christ and Him crucified is where it all begins and where it all ends. It is the
completeness of our lives, who we were, who we are, and who we are to become. To remove Christ and the Cross from
the Church, is to move the Church out of Christ Himself. As you take a look at today’s churches, you will see that Christ,
His glory, His righteousness and holiness, is no longer an important factor, sad to say.
The believer must understand that to properly have faith in the Word is to have faith in the Cross. In fact, it is very
important for the believer to understand that every single thing that we receive from God, and I mean every single thing,
is all made possible by what Jesus did at the Cross.
This is why the Lord put it in our hearts, to begin KBEC, so the message of the Cross can be taught,
preached and spread abroad. There is NO victory, without a proper understanding of it, No true, Godly, prosperity, No
liberty, No peace, No joy and No true, Godly freedom, without a proper understanding of the Message of the Cross.
THE MANNER OF SUBSTITUTION and IDENTIFICATION.
Do you know of
anyone who is
capable of living a
sin free life, never did
anybody any wrong,
but yet offer
themselves as a living
sacrifice, a slain
lamb, for the entire
world, so we can
have eternal life, and
have life more
abundantly;
Victorious living?
Anyone, other Jesus?
Mackintosh said: “Still, though sin-bearing is not the thought,
there is full provision for one who knows himself to be a sinner,
else he could not have any portion therein. To have fellowship
with God, we must function ‘in the light’ (I John 1:7). And to
function or be ‘in the light,’ we must understand that only on the
ground of that precious statement, ‘The blood of Jesus Christ
God’s Son cleanses us from all sin,’ can this be. The more we
abide in the light, the deeper will be our sense of everything
which is contrary to that light; and the deeper, also, our sense of
the value of that blood which entitles us to be there.”
We must never forget that it is blood which is sprinkled on
the altar round about. This means that fellowship with God must
be encircled by atonement and only exists within it. Thus, God
and the worshipper are brought into fellowship. Peace is
established. Worship that’s not based fully on the death of Christ
is not worship that God will recognize.
Its eternal and unshakable foundation is not the worth of
the worshipper but the preciousness of the sprinkled blood.

  • 1. Kingdom Builders Education Center KBEC Your online spirit-filled education center Semester 1 Course 2 – Substitution & Identification Class Facilitator, Ann M. Chealey Welcome!
  • 2. In this Semester we will cover the following: • Both the Old & New Testament points us to Christ & the Cross • Week 1 & 2 – Substitution & Identification • Week 3 & 4 – Doctrine of Faith Relating to the Cross • Week 5 & 6 – Kingdom of God 101 The Focus of the Bible is the “Message of the Cross”
  • 3. There were many precious items that was used in the Tabernacle. Everything had to be consecrated, cleaned, and the animals that were used for sacrifices, had to be spotless, without defects. This lets us now how precious the Blood of Christ is! His life was a great sacrifice, because as a man, He had to live a spotless life. Even though He was God, He had to live as a man. So, His living was uncompromisable, and His sacrifice is undeniable. No greater sacrifice that has ever been made, than the one that Jesus made of His life.
  • 4. Semester I: Course 2 Lesson I: Substitution The Doctrine of the Cross of Christ is the first and foremost doctrine of the complete Plan of Redemption. As we go through these courses, please keep in mind the following, which is God’s prescribed order of victory: 1. FOCUS: The Lord Jesus Christ (John 14:6) 2. OBJECT OF FAITH: The Cross of Christ (Romans 6:1-14; Gal. 2:20-21). 3. POWER SOURCE: The Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:1-2, 11). 4. RESULTS: Victory (Rom. 6:14) Now, I want you to take a minute to think about today’s church, the message that the church is pre-dominantly preaching, the souls that are not being saved, the bondages that are not being broken, miracles that are not taken place in today’s church vs the operation of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament church. Have you took your minute? If you look at the overall condition of today’s church, you will understand the importance of the formula I previously mentioned above, and why the formula below is what the church is using, and why it is NOT God’s prescribed order of victory. 1. FOCUS: Works 2. OBJECT OF FAITH: Our Performance 3. POWER SOURCE: Self 4. RESULTS: Failure As we go through these lessons, it will become more evident to you, as to why the Doctrine of the Cross of Christ is forever important. In the Old Testament, under the Levitical system, the priests handled the offerings that were offered to the Lord, on the behalf of the sinner. Under the old covenant, there were 5 different offerings that were used to cover the sins of the offender. We want to take a brief look at the Levitical system, because it emphasizes the significance of Christ and the Cross.
  • 5. In the Old Testament, The Levitical (Sacrificial) System there were 5 offerings that God set in place for a sinner to come and offer unto Him, as a sacrifice to take the penalty of his/her sin. The 5 offerings that God allowed were: • WHOLE BURNT OFFERING • THE MEAT OFFERING • THE PEACE OFFERING • THE SIN OFFERING • THE TRESPASS OFFERING These five offerings, were offerings that used a sacrifice (ex. Lamb, bullock, ram, goat, dove, pigeon, vegetable, grain) that was without spot or blemish, and perfect in nature. WHOLE BURNT OFFERING, with this offering, the entire animal was burned on the altar, with the exception of the skin, which was given to the priests. It signified God was giving His all and, in turn, would satisfy the demands of God, who was greatly offended. MEAT OFFERING, was an offering of thanksgiving and contained no flesh. It almost always accompanied the whole burnt offering. Some of this offering was burned on the altar, with another part given to the priests. As well, the word meat, as it was used in Bible times, referred to all types of food, but not flesh. At the present, it refers only to the flesh. THE SIN OFFERING, is linked to the stages of our Christian growth. When we start out with the Lord, there are many things we still need to learn. In fact, we commit sins of ignorance, or to say it better, we sin at times simply because we do not know or understand God’s prescribed order of victory. THE TRESPASS OFFERING, as the sin offering pertains to our Christian growth, the trespass offering relates to our Christian walk. This offering pertains more so to our sinning against our brother or sister in the Lord than anything else. THE PEACE OFFERING, in offering up the other sacrifices, with the exception of the meat offering, most of the time, a peace offering would follow, meaning that the problem had been addressed, and the peace of God was now resident within the believer’s heart.
  • 6. With this offering, the entire animal was burned on the altar, with the exception of the skin, which was given to the priests. It signified God was giving His all and, in turn, would satisfy the demands of God, who was greatly offended. This offering set the standard and suggested the themes which are manifested by all the other Levitical offerings. It is a biblical type in the fullest sense of the word. The animal was a substitute in the place of the offerer, symbolizing Christ, who was our substitute as well. In other words, God doesn’t look so much at us as He does the object of our faith. If the object of our faith is anything other than Christ and the Cross, then it is rejected. Considering that there has been so little preaching and teaching on the Cross in the last several decades, this means that much of the efforts of Christian mankind are rejected by the Lord. The only thing that God will accept is the crucified Christ. Paul said, “But God forbid that I should glory (boast) save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Gal 6:14). Of all the things that Jesus did in His Incarnation, the real purpose for His becoming man was to go to the Cross. The Cross was ever His destination. This means that it was not an accident, and incident, an assassination, or execution. His death on the Cross of Calvary was a sacrifice! When He was placed on the Cross, He was perfect in every respect; therefore, God accepted His poured out life in the shedding of His precious blood as payment for all the sin of mankind- past, present, and future- at least for all who will believe (John 3:16; Eph 2:13-18). Under the old covenant, when the offering was tendered, the worshipper- imperfect and sinful in himself- was accepted in the perfection of the offering. That is extremely important, and it has not changed to this moment. When the believing sinner places his or her faith exclusively in Christ and what Christ has done at the Cross, the Lord accepts that person on the basis of the perfect sacrifice of Christ and the person’s faith in Christ. In other words, in the sacrifices under the Mosaic Law, the priest didn’t even really look at the sinner; he looked at the sacrifice. If the sacrifice was acceptable, then the believing sinner was acceptable as well. It has not changed from then until now. Therefore, the conscience of the offerer, being a reflection of the sacrifice, remained imperfect as well. And yet, at the same time, the sacrifice of Christ being perfect gives a perfected conscience and, therefore, a peace that nothing can destroy. That’s the difference in the Mosaic sacrificial system and the perfect system under Christ. All of the old Levitical system was meant only to serve as a stopgap measure until the reality could come. Offering 1: WHOLE BURNT OFFERING.
  • 7. Paul said, “But now (since the Cross) has He (the Lord Jesus) obtained a more excellent ministry (the New Covenant in Jesus’blood is superior, and takes the place of the Old Covenant in animal blood), but how much also He is the Mediator of a better covenant (proclaims the fact that Christ officiates between God and man according to the arrangements of the New Covenant), which was established upon better promises. (This presents the New Covenant explicitly based on the cleansing and forgiveness of all sin, which the Old Covenant could not do.) “For if that first covenant had been faultless (proclaims the fact that the first covenant was definitely not faultless; as stated, it was based on animal blood, which was vastly inferior to the precious blood of Christ), then should no place have been sought for the second (proclaims the necessity of the New Covenant)” (Heb. 8:6-7). Without proper sacrifice, and again we refer to Christ, there can be no forgiveness. Christianity basis of forgiveness is centered around the atonement of Christ.
  • 8. This was an offering of thanksgiving and contained no flesh. It almost always accompanied the whole burnt offering. Some of this offering was burned on the altar, with another part given to the priests. As well, the word meat, as it was used in Bible times, referred to all types of food, but not flesh. At the present, it refers only to the flesh: AND WHEN ANY will offer a meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon” (Lev. 2:1) As previously stated, in Bible times, meat just simply referred to food, mostly grains, which, of course, contains no flesh. In our interpretation presently, this offering could be labeled a food offering or a meal offering. The Hebrew word for meat is minchah, and means “a gift made by an inferior to a superior.” It actually was a gratitude or thanksgiving offering. While all of it refers to Christ, it does so in a different way. For instance, as the burnt offering typified Christ in death, the meat offering typified Him in life. This is very important when one considers that many do not properly understand Christ, Substitution and Identification, and more so do not understand the Incarnation, i.e., God becoming man. The entire Levitical system was appointed by God, to point to the life of Christ, His humanity, life, living and walk. From the beginning, Satan has diligently sought to lead people astray from this truth. As someone has well said, if a person could find on this earth the individual whom they think is the godliest, the kindest, the most Christlike, the one in whom the fruit of the Spirit functions to the greatest degree, upon close association with that individual, whomever they might be, one would quickly see the faults, flaws and imperfections. The longer one stayed around that person, again, whomever that person might be, the more faults and flaws one would observe; however, the closer we get to Christ, the very opposite result is to be found. His perfection becomes event greater perfection, if such is possible. His attributes and qualities are enlarged upon the closer that we inspect the Man from galilee. Offering 2: MEAT OFFERING.
  • 9.
  • 10. There has always been much discussion about Christ, concerning the question as to whether He could have sinned or not. Many take the position that inasmuch as He was God as well as man, in effect, the God-Man, Jesus Christ, He could not sin because God can’t sin. While it is certainly true that Jesus Christ was God, never ceased to be God, and, in fact, will always be God, still, when He became man, He forever laid aside the expression of His deity while, at the same time, retaining possession of His deity. In other words, even though He definitely is God, He functioned as a man. Jesus grew hungry, thirsty, and tired, which are all characteristics of the flesh. We know that God cannot get hungry, thirsty, or tired! So, we must come back to the position that even though Jesus is God, and always will be God due to the incarnation, He now functions as a man (Zech. 12:10; 13:6) We will come back to this topic later on… “And he shall bring it to Aaron’s sons the priests: and he shall take thereout his handful of the flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord: And the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons: it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the Lord made by fire” (Lev. 2:2-3). According to the Pulpit Commentary, for every handful of flour burnt on the altar, nearly a gallon went to the priests. They had to eat it within the precincts of the tabernacle, as was the case with all food that was most holy. This included the shewbread, and the flesh of the sin offering and of the trespass offering (Lev. 10:12). However, when the priests personally offered meat offerings, it was all wholly burnt, with none kept for themselves (Lev 6:23). MEAT OFFERING: JESUS AS GOD and MAN.
  • 11. The word memorial served a twofold purpose:. It pertained to the believer not failing to remember what the Lord has done for him, especially what Jesus has done for us. As well, it pertained to the fact that God will not forget His promises. The Psalmist said, “Remember all your offerings, and accept your burnt sacrifice” (Psalm 20:3) The greatest promise that God made, and in which the meat offering was a type, was that He would send a Redeemer into the world to lift man out of this darkness. This one sent would be the perfect one. Moses wrote all of this down in the Pentateuch (the five books of the Law). This offering was a sweet savour to the Lord, not so much because of the offering, but rather what, or more particularly, who it represented. It typified Christ in His perfection. In all of our doing, we must present Christ! In all of our believing, we must believe Christ! Nothing must come between us and Christ, and nothing must take the place of Christ. We can not offer anything else to the Lord that He will accept, except Christ! The meat offerings are mentioned after the burnt offerings. This means that all which pertained to the meat offerings are predicated on the burnt offering, which typified the Cross and what Jesus did there to appease the wrath of God (Substitution). Only the spotless Lamb of God could pay the price, and the meat offering proclaimed the purity of Christ, in fact, a perfect purity. There were several ways that the offering could be prepared, and instructions were given for each method. God has a certain way that He has already established for us to come to Him, to receive justification, and that’s by faith, keeping our faith daily in the finished work of Jesus Christ. There is no other method that we can obtain justification from God, and atonement for our sins, and receive complete victory. “Therefore being Justified by Faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. By Whom also we have access by Faith into this Grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the Glory of God (Rom 5:1-2). Every person should ever be directed to the Cross, whether the sinner being saved or the saint being righteous. All are tied to the Cross, and the Cross alone! The Resurrection was a foregone conclusion in that Jesus atoned for all sin. THE MEMORIAL.
  • 12.
  • 13. “No meat offering, which you shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven: for you shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the Lord made by fire. “As for the oblation of the first fruits, you shall offer them unto the LORD: but they shall not be burnt on the altar for a sweet savour” (Lev 2:11-12).Why was there no honey in this offering? Honey, as leaven, can go into fermentation, as well; however, there is an added thought respecting honey. Honey, as given here, represents all natural good, or at least that which man labels as good, which is in man outside of Christ. It would have something to do with the good part of theTree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, with all of that tree being forbidden (Gene 2:17). In fact, this good is not only the greatest problem of the unredeemed, it so happens to be the greatest problem of the redeemed as well! The unredeemed man thinks that his good will save him, which it won’t! Regrettably, the redeemed man often tries to live for God by the means of his so-called goodness. However, let it be understood that this particular good, whether in the unredeemed or the redeemed cannot be accepted at all by God.This is why we see in today’s churches, the new focus is community outreach. Most of these community outreach programs, or called ministries is not ministry that God will recognize or accept, because the focus has become works, and not the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the only means of salvation, sanctification and justification for mankind. The meat offering, as stated, typified the spotless, pure, perfect, and uncorrupted life of the Lord Lord Jesus Christ. We make a great mistake when we look at that particular life and then try to imitate it imitate it by our own strength and ability. It cannot be done that way! The only way that His perfect life life can be ours, and the only way it is meant to be ours, is by and through what Christ did for us at the the Cross. “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me” (Gal 2:20). Again, we are justified by faith, not of works, lest any man should boast. “For by grace are you you Saved through Faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Eph 2:8-9). When the scripture speaks of our having fellowship with Christ’s sufferings, it refers simply to His NO HONEY: JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH OR WORKS
  • 14. “AND IF HIS oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offer it of the herd; whether it be a male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the Lord” (Lev 3:1). Concerning the peace offering, Mackintosh said: “There is none of the offerings in which the communion of the worshipper so fully unfolded as in the ‘peace offering.’ In the ‘burnt offering,’ it is Christ offering Himself to God. In the ‘meat offering,’ we have Christ’s perfect humanity. Then, passing on to the ‘sin offering,’ we learn that sin, in its root, is fully met. In the ‘trespass offering,’ there is a full answer to the actual sins. But in none is the doctrine of the communion of the worshipper unfolded. This latter belongs to the ‘peace offering.’’’ In both the peace offering and the trespass offering, we learn of the presence of the sin nature in the heart and life of the believer. However, we find out even more fully in the peace offering that even though the sin nature dwells in us, it is Not to rule in us. Christ was the perfect substitution for us. He bored our sicknesses and iniquities to Calvary’s Cross, and gave us His righteousness. Paul addressed this directly by saying, “Let not sin (the sin nature) therefore reign (rule) in your mortal body, that you should obey it in the lusts thereof” (Rom. 6:12). Where there no sin nature, there would have been no need for the peace or the trespass offering. The more closely we view these offerings, the more fully we see the necessity of the five offerings in order that Christ be properly portrayed as it regards His finished work. The peace offering portrays communion with God and the believer’s place and position in Christ, due to what Christ has done for us at the Cross. It was the only offering in which the offerer could partake, which signified that peace had now been restored. Offering 3: PEACE OFFERING
  • 15.
  • 16. When the individual brought his animals for sacrifice, as he generally brought two, one would be for the peace offering. After the burnt, sin, or trespass offering had been presented, which was followed by the meat offering, it was now time for the peace offering. He would then “lay his hand upon the head of his offering,” which portrayed the beautiful doctrine of substitution and identification. The animal became the substitute in the sinner’s place, and by the laying of his hand or hands on the head of his offering, he identified with that substitute. That, in effect, is the heart of the Gospel. Christ became our substitute, and we identify with Him in all He did, but more particularly, what He did for us at the Cross. Rom. 6:1-10 says the following, What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that Grace may abound? (Just because Grace is greater than sin doesn’t mean that the Believer has a license to sin.) 2 God forbid. How shall we, who are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know you not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? (I Cor.12:13; Gal. 3:27; Eph. 4:5; Col. 2:11-13) When Christ died on the Cross, in the mind of God, we died with Him; He became our Substitute, and our Identification with Him in His death gives us all the benefits for which He died; the idea is that He did it all for us! This is why Faith in the Cross is evidently forever of the greatest importance. 4 Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the Glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His Death (Paul proclaims the Cross as the instrument through which all Blessings come; consequently, the Cross must ever be the Object of our Faith, which gives the Holy Spirit latitude to work within our lives), we shall also be in the likeness of His Resurrection: (We can have Resurrection life, as long as we understand the “likeness of His Death”, which refers to the Cross as the Means by which all of this is done.) 6 Knowing this, that our old man is Crucified with Him (all that we were before conversion), that the body of sin might be destroyed that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he who is dead (He was our substitute, and in the mind of God, we died with Him upon believing Faith) is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ (once again pertains to the Cross, and our being Baptized into His death), we believe that we shall also live with Him (have Resurrection Life, which is more Abundant Life, Jn. 10:10). PEACE OFFERING: THE DOCTRINE OF SUBSTITUTION & IDENTIFICATION.
  • 17. It is always by faith. This refers to the fact that Identification cannot be made with Christ by works, but only by faith, To properly understand faith, at least that which is given to us in the Word of God, we must understand the object of faith. Every human being in the world has faith, but only a small portion have the right kind of faith. This refers to the correct object of faith, which is Jesus Christ and Him crucified (I Cor. 1:17-18, 21, 23; 2:2). The phrase, Jesus Christ and Him crucified, sums up the entirety of the Word of God all the way from Genesis 1:1 through Revelation 22:21. So as it regards the nonspiritual kind of faith, and even the spiritual kind that is not anchored in Christ and Him crucified, it is not recognized by God. Therefore, when we speak of faith, we must always understand that it’s faith in Christ and His Cross. We must understand, that all true believers are seated with Him, spiritually speaking (Eph. 2:6) This should help us to understand even further, why so many confessing Christians (believers) are bound by some type of sin, struggle, weight, issue, because the Cross and the revelation of the Cross is not being taught, nor preached in today’s churches. The Cross of Christ, Christ and Him crucified is where it all begins and where it all ends. It is the completeness of our lives, who we were, who we are, and who we are to become. To remove Christ and the Cross from the Church, is to move the Church out of Christ Himself. As you take a look at today’s churches, you will see that Christ, His glory, His righteousness and holiness, is no longer an important factor, sad to say. The believer must understand that to properly have faith in the Word is to have faith in the Cross. In fact, it is very important for the believer to understand that every single thing that we receive from God, and I mean every single thing, is all made possible by what Jesus did at the Cross. This is why the Lord put it in our hearts, to begin KBEC, so the message of the Cross can be taught, preached and spread abroad. There is NO victory, without a proper understanding of it, No true, Godly, prosperity, No liberty, No peace, No joy and No true, Godly freedom, without a proper understanding of the Message of the Cross. THE MANNER OF SUBSTITUTION and IDENTIFICATION.
  • 18. Do you know of anyone who is capable of living a sin free life, never did anybody any wrong, but yet offer themselves as a living sacrifice, a slain lamb, for the entire world, so we can have eternal life, and have life more abundantly; Victorious living? Anyone, other Jesus?
  • 19. Mackintosh said: “Still, though sin-bearing is not the thought, there is full provision for one who knows himself to be a sinner, else he could not have any portion therein. To have fellowship with God, we must function ‘in the light’ (I John 1:7). And to function or be ‘in the light,’ we must understand that only on the ground of that precious statement, ‘The blood of Jesus Christ God’s Son cleanses us from all sin,’ can this be. The more we abide in the light, the deeper will be our sense of everything which is contrary to that light; and the deeper, also, our sense of the value of that blood which entitles us to be there.” We must never forget that it is blood which is sprinkled on the altar round about. This means that fellowship with God must be encircled by atonement and only exists within it. Thus, God and the worshipper are brought into fellowship. Peace is established. Worship that’s not based fully on the death of Christ is not worship that God will recognize. Its eternal and unshakable foundation is not the worth of the worshipper but the preciousness of the sprinkled blood.
