Cutaneous lesions in leprosy
1. Cutaneous Lesions in Leprosy
Prototype skin lesions
• Can be single (TT) or multiple (LL).
• Are usually hypopigmented, though may be
erythematous.
• Are usually macules or plaques though in BL
and LL, papules or nodules may be seen.
• May be well-defined (TT, BT) or poorly defined
(BL, LL). Well-defined plaque has ‘cliff edge’ and
a less-defined plaque has a ‘sloping edge’ .
2. • Show epidermal atrophy, so the lesions
appear shiny.
• Show loss of appendages (so absent hair and
sweating).
• Show an(hypo)esthesia. Lesions of TT are
anesthetic &that of BT, BB, BL are
hypoesthetic
3. • Indeterminate leprosy
• Usually seen in children, in endemic areas.
• Hypopigmented patch usually 1-5cm in
diameter.
• Usually present on face, thigh, extensor
surface of limbs
• May be slightly dry and wrinked.
• Hypoesthesia may be present
4.
5. Tuberculoid Leprosy
• Lesions are 1-3 in number & asymmetric.
• Well-defined, hypopigmented, anesthetic
macule(s) or plaque(s),
• Typical lesion is a well defined eyrthematous
plaque with raised and clear cut edges sloping
inward.
• The lesions show hair loss and impairment of
sweating.
6.
7. Borderline Tuberculoid
Lesions are large, hypopigmented macules or
plaques. They differ from TT in that they are:
• Less sharply demarcated, having satellite
lesions
• More in number.
• Less asymmetrical.
• Less hypoesthetic.
Few nerves may be asymmetrically thickened
8.
9. Borderline Borderline
• Presence of dimorphic lesion.
• Multiple skin lesion of all size and shape
including papules,plaques,circinate lesion and
even nodule.
• Characteristic skin lesion are annular where
inner edge is ‘punched out’ & outer edge is ill
defined sloping toward normal skin.
• Normal skin within such plaques gives ‘Swiss
Cheese’ apperance.
