2. 1970- present
• San Francisco: a small, vibrant and impactful city where
innovative public policy was created, because of the
dedication of a group of activists and law makers who
clashed, collaborated for over 4 decades. I personally know
some of them.
• 1970 - 700,000 people. Whites 75%. African Am was about
15%. Chinese 7%.
• In 1990, Whites 60%, African Am 12%, Chinese 12%.
• By 2000, city population was 800,000. Whites 50%. blacks
declined to 6.3%. Chinese now at 20%.
3. Words of Wisdom
• Success and failures of many battles. No short
cut.

Editor's Notes
Blacks are the biggest losers in SF gen movement, their community was almost wiped out. In fact Western Addition was the center of black intellectuals and middle class, where political leaders and welcome artists were born. Today Wester addition is mostly white uppies. Blacks were forced to move to Oakland, and other parts of East Bay.
Since the Project started tracking the data in 1997, 11,766 no-fault evictions occurred in San Francisco, including 3,693 Ellis Acts (the property owner removes the unit[s] from the rental market permanently), 6,952 Owner Move-Ins (OMIs), and 1,121 demolitions
When the HKChinese immigrated HK to SF before 1997, they bought large numbers of houses in the sunset and Richmond, causing housing prices to soar. This intensified Black Chinese relations, and also make the lives of CT families more difficult as rent becomes unaffordable. Today we see the influx of tech professionals following the job market to SF, Silicon. They are driving up rent and property value making life miserable for the working poor.
You are activists, artists and social justice minded people. You all have a part in the movement. The law is just a small part. Protests are also a small part. Changing life and inspiring people to action is the most important component to winning.
