3. Our Country - Portugal
Oh salty sea, how much of your salt
Are tears of Portugal!
To get across you, how many mothers cried,
How many sons prayed in vain!
How many brides remained unmarried
For that thou shouldest be ours, oh sea!
Fernando Pessoa – Poet

Europe, founded in 1143. The continental part is located at the
southwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, bordering the north and
east with Spain, and the west and south with the Ocean Atlantic.
The Portuguese territory also includes two autonomous regions:
the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores.

➢ Portugal is a very catholic country.
Therefore, Christmas is very important for
us;
➢ Portuguese families gather on December
24th for dinner. Cod dishes and typical
desserts are served at the table;
➢ At midnight, Mass of the Rooster (“Missa
do Galo”) is celebrated. In churches, as well
as at home, there is a special place for the
crib.
➢ Christmas gifts are exchanged after
midnight (or the following morning).
➢ Coral/Youth groups often sing from door to
door during December/January. As in 2023
the World Youth Day will be in Portugal,
Catholic groups are collecting funds.
