24. Quickly learned we can’t go it
alone. Just one dissenting voice
and the momentum could be lost
or dead on arrival.
25. Also, quickly learned that point
to point affiliations can be
effective, but is not enough and
there is much overhead in
managing multiple relationships.

Outside of Government with my new home at AECOMso I get to rep our firm with NSGIC, at MAPPS, at ASPRS, and now here at URSISA GIS Pro. I did have to roll off of NGAC because of my sector change….. In the new role I get to witness the good, the bad, the not-so-bad, and the sometimes ugly…in government delaings… there is still much to be done. Most of all, I’m still very passionate about SSDIs and LSDIs – for NSDI…..I cherish the opportnties to work on projects that and appluad the work that many groups such as URISA have pioneered… I also applaud the many other organziations that have gotten it from the begginning, promtoing sound pracitces – grouwing local to local, local to statewide and naitonal naitonal cadastal and digital coast are just a few programs that had it right in the 1990’s and their perservance and patience to keep the drum beat going are paying off….m

Beyond number crunching…… martketing tactics…. All of us are selling something…… and perhaps we’d be better served by incorporating better marketing strategies in our programs…… I occassionally dust off this book by James Twitchell Twhent Ads That shool the World… 20 short case studiesn on folks like PT Barnum sold the circus……how ___ sold…… and how Vodka industry learned from the perfume industry on how to market its tasteless liquid…… I like how the OneMaps have tried to create a feeling… a sense of belongiing.. Or a tactic of somesort to make their brand popularr….. Next slide….
the crowd I most associatiate with is selling community….

Digging Deeper means sliently rehearsing your elevator speech and being ready…..who knew..at the five guys burger joint… it also means having a common message with our colleagues.. As th emessage carries that much more weight if repeasted and the message is sustained…….at NSGIC….we have a rotaing president… go on the explain how the advo agenda came to be…….consistent message from membership…sustain it over time….and if not put in plaqce a processs to assess the priorities and evolve them through strucutre… The AA process can help to perfect your message, tie it to business priroties, bring consistency.
Lessons learned that we can’t go at it alone. Lessons learned form other organziations ---NaCO MAPPS.
