1. RN-BSN Admission Essay

I start with a quote said by the great, Florence Nightingale, “Nursing is an art: and if it is
to be made an art, it requires as exclusive a devotion, as hard a preparation, as any painter’s or
sculptor’s work; for what is the having to be with dead canvas or cold marble, compared with
having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had
almost said the finest of the fine arts.”
I have learned nursing isn’t just medical knowledge, giving medication, knowing how to
read a cardiac monitor, or being able to insert a foley catheter correctly (although very important)
- it is so much more. It is truly caring for and helping another human being when he/she cannot
do it. It is reaching out, holding a dying patients hand to let him know you are there. It is
listening, as your patient shares their fears and joys with you. It is rejoicing when life is brought
into this world and grieving when it is taken. It is sharing a smile and sometimes even a tear. It is
not passing judgement, but instead setting aside your personal view and delivering the best care
you can possibly give. Nursing draws love and compassion when you think you have no more to
give.
When I graduated high school, at the age of 17, I enrolled into Kennebec Valley
Community College’s ADN program. Initially, I was going to attend a four year university upon
graduating high school. Attending KVCC enabled me to finish nursing school at the age of 19
virtually debt free. I will be taking my NCLEX in 3 short weeks to become a Registered Nurse.
While my peers whom I graduate high school with are still in college working towards their RN
2. license I will already be an RN working in the emergency department. I have always been a goal
driven and highly motivated individual.
I want to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner within five years, helping to foster the growth
and development of todays generation and tomorrows youth. At the age of 18 I was diagnosed
with premature ovarian failure due to a genetic mutation in one of my chromosomes. If my
Pediatrician had caught the early signs and symptoms of POF I would not have had to suffer with
some of the irreversible complications of this diagnosis. As a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner I will
increase newborn testing standards for often life threatening and debilitating illnesses such as:
Krabbe Disease, Fragile-X Syndrome and Cystic Fibrosis.
The next step in my academic journey is to obtain my BSN. I believe that Husson
University can help me accomplish not only my long term goals but also my short term goals of
providing the best care possible to my patients.
