This chapter discusses three key theories related to social media: computer-mediated communication (CMC), diffusion theory, and social media theory. It defines CMC as communication through social media and explains how it shapes social networks and behaviors. Diffusion theory is also covered, focusing on how new ideas, practices, and products spread. The chapter then looks at how interpersonal communication research informed the development of CMC theory to explain online interactions.
