|{EASC Visit A Success!
r The much anticipated focus visit by an accreditation team from the Commission on Institutions of
Higher Education, part of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. (lr{EASC), took
place in early March' Although the team's official report on the college's accreditation status t u, nbiU""o
issued, their favorable exit interview has set an optimistic tone.
In her rccent Now and Then letter to the college community, Dr. Van Der Ploeg thanked the staff and
faculty "who went the extra mile" since the team's last visit in 1996 to make this evaluation a success.
However, despite the favorable reception she cautioned that much work still needs to be done. ,.'We
must
continue with a regular schedule of assessment, planning, and budgeting. We must continue to work on r
our governance structure and blend academics and operations," she stated. "We must continue to tie
everything we do to the mission. Needless to say, we still have work to do but we have made tremendous
progress."
When the NEASC accreditation team first visited the college two years ago, their report cited several
concerns that deferred accreditation to this year. The evaluation called for the establishment of Mission
and Purposes, Planning and Evaluation, and Organi zation and Govemance structures. The president and
the college cornmunity immediately devised strategies to address these issues and the positive response to
this hard work certainly indicates time well spent. In recognition, the president has pianned a celebration
and ceremony on Thursday, April 9 at 11:30 a.m. in room 113 of the North Haven .u-p1r, to review the
NEASC report, reward our teamwork, present service awards and hand out some additional ,omystery
awards." Be sure to mark your calendars.
