2. 1. COMPANY HISTORY & BACKGROUND
Zimnat Insurance was founded in 1946 as the Insurance Company of Rhodesia Limited (ICR)
primarily as a provider of short-term insurance products.
In 1959, the Assurance Company of Rhodesia was born after ICR purchased a life business
arm.
TA Holdings Limited took over the composite company ICR in 1969.
In 1980 the company name changed to Zimnat Insurance Company Limited trading under a
composite license.
TA made a decision to split the composite license and in 1984 and Zimnat Life Assurance
Company Limited was born.
In 1999, Zimnat Insurance merged with Lion of Zimbabwe to form Zimnat Lion Insurance
Company Limited (Zimnat Lion).
- Zimnat Insurance was dominant in personal lines, farming and motor lines
- Lion Insurance was predominantly a corporate and commercial insurer
- The merger created the largest short-term insurer in the country at that time.
Zimnat Lion was listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange in 2001.
In early 2005 Zimnat Lion merged with AIG Zimbabwe. This merger brought with it,
