dramatic. In this episode, a Texan teacher was getting ready for
bed one night when suddenly her apartment door was kicked in.

Jozi experiences colour
Holi One Colour and Neon Festival takeJoburg by storm with DJ Fresh
WITH its origins traced back to the early
beginnings of the Hindu religion, the Holi
One Colour and Neon Festival is now a glob-
ally- celebrated event that unleashed a kalei-
doscope of colour clouds in Jozi on May 1.
Over the years, the religiously-adopted
funfair has been customised into the We
Are ONE secular celebration that seeks to
unify music lovers from all walks of life and
what better time to bring music, light and
love to Johannesburg than now?
Trace witnessed thousands of free-spir-
ited powder-wielding party animals detonat-
ing colour bombs among the music-loving
masses. After successfully managing to
meander through the rambunctious crowd,
we caught up with legendary SA producer
DJ Fresh for an exclusive Q&A:
After effectively diversifying your
fan base and musical aesthetic,
how do you see your sound evolving
further?
I’ve been one of the best chameleons in
the industry in terms of either having to
reinvent myself or reposition myself, while
staying relevant to one market and growing
in another.
I can play five different gigs in one night to
different crowds or play five different genres
of house music so the ability to adapt is very
important in our industry.
Do you have any secret rituals or
warm-up routines before each set?
I honestly don’t. Everything I’ve done has
been spur-of-the-moment and I think it’s
very important to be able to read the crowd
and adapt your set to the previous one.
What has been your craziest groupie
experience to date?
I’ve had bras and panties thrown into the DJ
box. I’ve had a guy come up to me and say:
“please sign my girlfriends’ boobs, she loves
you so much.” On one occasion, it rained bras
during my set and I left the booth with six.
Where do you draw most of your
inspiration?
Mostly from the fans that take the time to
either drop me an email or stop me before
a set to tell me how much of an impact I’ve
made on their lives. A doting fan once told
me that my Fresh House Flava 4 album
helped kick their drug habit while in rehab.
Life-changing stories like that make my
work all the more rewarding.
From the onset of your career, who
has been your most influential art-
ist/producer?
That would have to be DJ Oskido because
he gave me my first big break in 1992 when
I was a starry-eyed 18 year old.
I also admire how he, too, has managed
to stay relevant over the years.
Are there any international artists
you’d like to collaborate with?
Calvin Harris does special things in terms
of music and EDM so he’s definitely the guy
I’d team up with.
Inspiring: DJ Fresh and another DJ wow the crowds.
