Dear Zachary:
I was very pleased to have your exhibition “Human” display at our gallery here at
Montana State University this last month.
The Exit Gallery is always looking for unique and exciting shows that stretch our
audiences and their understanding of art. Your show exceeded our expectations in terms
of both content and the technical excellence of your work. Our staff said you were very
easy to work with, and the installation went very smoothly. I’m confident that your
photographs will be remembered fondly by those who visited the gallery during your
show.
Thanks again for participating in this semester’s shows at the Exit Gallery. We hope your
thesis presentation goes well. It was a pleasure working with you.
Sincerely,
Hannah M Safford

5. As you walk into The Foundry, Bozeman Mt, you are met with a wall of colorful animal masks
and a mirror. The perimeter of the room is lined with 11x14 black and white nude portraits.
This is Human, by Zachery Gartner. Not only are the images well lit and visually interesting,
but the people within the photos are wearing the masks hung on the wall. Each model is
posed in an interesting composition within the piece, often reflecting the shape or action of the
animal being portrayed.
Because the face cannot be seen, you begin to communicate differently with each piece.
Instead of studying the face that belongs to the body, playing the comparison game, you
instead focus on the details and intricacies of each character. Skin tones. Shapes. Textures.
Movement. The rawness of the animal kingdom being expressed through the naked human
body in a very traditional manner: black and white photography. The masks do not create
comic relief, but instead mask the viewers discrepancies of what nudity stands for and allows
one to look beyond it, into the story the composition tells.
Human by Zachery Gartner is compelling and takes a different stance on the average nude
portrait, going beyond the cliche masked photograph. The show was captivating, evoking
conversation, and was very professional. I look forward to see what Zach will create next,
and where he will draw his inspiration from.
