5. “blackstrap”golden barrel molasses
This was a personal rebranding project done for golden barrel’s
blackstrap molasses. the intent was to bring an “outdated”
sweetener up to speed for the modern day consumer. while
the product and its image were being rebranded, It was of peek
importance to preserve its iconic aspects.
the molasses is to be placed in a pourable glass bottle.
glassware continues the sweetener’s tradition while the bottle
provides a means for cleaner use and pourable application.

The branding itself takes on a minimalistic, contemporary approach.
The AIM is to make the bottle sleek enough TO where consumers
would prefer for it to remain on the kitchen counter, as opposed to
away in their cabinets; Much like the olive oil products of today. If
the bottle is more readily available on the counter, then the greater
the chances are of the product becoming a staple for consumers.
a series of simple shapes and colors are paired to promote
the product. Gold amplif es the richness of the brand and its
product, while the cool blue ushers in a sense of cleanliness to a
notoriously untidy sweetener.
Finishing it off, and ceiling the packages contents, is a wooden
corkscrew. this selection of material serves as a nod to the wooden
spoons often used throughout the sweeteners history. It also pairs
well as an amiable contrast to the matte black bottle below.

10. RESURRECTION
SCIENCE
In a world dominated by people and rapid climate change,
species large and small are increasingly vulnerable to extinction.
In Resurrection Science, journalist M. R. O'Connor explores the extreme measures
scientists are taking to try and save them, from captive breeding and genetic
management to de-extinction. Paradoxically, the more we intervene to save
species, the less wild they often become. In stories of sixteenth-century galleon
excavations, panther-tracking in Florida swamps, ancient African rainforests,
Neanderthal tool-making, and cryogenic DNA banks, O'Connor investigates the
philosophical questions of an age in which we "play god" with earth's biodiversity.
Each chapter in this beautifully written book focuses on a unique species--from
the charismatic northern white rhinoceros to the infamous passenger pigeon--and
the people entwined in the animals' fates. Incorporating natural history and
evolutionary biology with conversations with eminent ethicists, O'Connor's
narrative goes to the heart of the human enterprise: What should we preserve of
wilderness as we hurtle toward a future in which technology is present in nearly
every aspect of our lives? How can we co-exist with species when our existence
and their survival appear to be pitted against one another?

11. “in our image”Resurrection Science
resurrection science is a book dealing with the ethical, moral, and
philisophical questions in association to the genetic management
and modi ication of animals across the globe.
Some of the questions raised include:
are we master or caretaker? can a species really exist if it can’t
survive in its own habitat? wouldn’t the species be considered extinct
if it’s only living members are in captivity? once in captivity, wouldn’t
the species begin to change in order to suit its new surroundings?
and after the change, can they really be considered the same as
those in the wild? would the species still be equipped to survive after
its reintroduction back into the wild and what domino effect would
it have on the surrounding ecosystem?
- and countless other consequential questions that require deep
introspection and are up for serious debate.

12. While all of the questions raised concern the species at hand. the
most important component lies within humanity and how we, as the
deciding body, view the issues,
the cover depicts an eye cradeling an animal embryo front and
center with the tip of a syringe lurking at bay.The eye and embryo are
a visual representation of the publications single most important
question; “how do we perceive a species?”
placing the imagery on a blood orange backdrop calls attention to
the question at hand while developing a sense of urgency within the
viewer. a syrange reaches from the tail of the book and rests on the
edges of the face. This syringe is a representation of man’s looming
decisions and serves as a means for any alterations in the species
outcome.

Massk is a venue BROUGHT TO LIFE through the careful application of
experiential design. Through sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste,
massk aims to cultivate acceptance across multiple demographics.
the venue utilizes performances and Street food in order To align
itself with these senses and spread its reach to the surrounding
community and beyond. with much attention payed to the precednts
of markets and performance venues, the conception of Massk at
pratt-pullman was made possible.
The venue revolves around a series of pods found throughout
the site. these Pods provide a space for local vendors to come in
and sell their colorful bites to the neighborhood of kirkwood.
In addition to their social motives, pods promote the congruent
aspects of lexibility found in markets and performance spaces. no
one-piece was permanent in either precedent during their earliest
stages, the pods at massk operate in similar fashion.

Pullman yard was originally used for the repair and maintanenance
of railcars for passing trains. Staying true to pullman and its
history, the site relies on an implemented grid of trolley tracks.
These tracks establish a system of lexibility and make all of the
venues seperate components one.
Pods make their way across tracks with the aid of supercapicitator
batteries. through the power generated from these batteries, pods
can be seamlessly positioned in accordance to the daily needs of
the venue. A Lunch rush at 12pm could end up looking much different
than a performance at 7:30pm.
Many of the performances are staged at the eastern end of the
market. space is illed with portable stadium seating and market
chairs in order to accomadate the house, Durable marley mats are
rolled out and set for performers to stage their show.
four pods are docked to provide support just behind the imported
stadium seating. In addition to the support pods provide plates in
tandem with the nights performance. This cultural combinition
of food and performance is done to layer the senses, sound,
sight, taste, touch, and smell are all wrapped into one to create a
cultural dynamo that permeates positivity and understanding.

Just above the market loor, a mezzanine is hoisted by steel rods and
joists. This mezzanine provides seating to market patrons during the
day and an additional space to view the performance at night. bay
rail tops line the edges of the mezzanine for viewers to comfortably
stand with food and view the performance below.
Sticking to pullmans industrial heritage and continuing massks
adherence to lexibility, a trolley curtain system is hung from the
underside of the market mezzanine. when in use, these grommeted
curtains are suspended from hooked conveyers in order to shield
the audience from any possible external distractions,

Looking to draw in the kirkwood community, Massk uses a series of
design features to attract passing pedestrians.
By creating a series of visual vectors, Massk is able to establish a
clear line of site from the entrance to the pullman bike path. These
vectors are developed through the pairing of custom crafted table
top rows and a the application of a raked concrete pattern.
together, they guide the eye from the edges of the venue to the

The amphitheatre is tucked away at the southeastern corner of the
venue and serves as the sole place where performance is established
in permanence.
Massk’s image is largely attached to the layering of corten, black
corten, and monochromatic steels. this image is fully embodied in
the amphitheatre and can be seen all along its exterior. In addition
to these metals, the structures identity is reinforced through heavy
right angles and carefully accented lighting.
The interior, however, has been cut and angled to amplify the
acoustics of the performance. STEEL SLIVERS, SIMILAR TO THE VENUES RAKED
PATH, LINE THE EDGES OF THE AMPHITHEATERE TO ACT AS A MEGAPHONE AND
PUSH FLEETING SOUND OUTwards TOWARDS THE AUDIENCE IN ATTENDANCE.
