Cage Soccer
Soccer has been the most dominating mainstream sport in Singapore ever since the Malaysia cup
and Singapore’s days of glory. Though many years ahead, now we have our own league and still a
good number of locals are passionate about supporting these homegrown teams. The weekly
English Premier League matches and the Spanish Primeira Liga has kept soccer fanatics glued to
the screens every weekend.
Of course, constant observance
would lead to the many soccer-crazy
fans, wanting to emulate their idols
or favorite teams. And what better
way to do this than night soccer;
where after a day’s toiling at work,
many working adults from the age
of 21-49 enjoy a semi-competitive
game of 5-a-side night soccer. The
stage is AstroTurf ; made from
synthetic fiber. Soccer boots with
studs, soccer socks, shin pads and
gloves are don.
Competition heats up to a point
where each team is allowed 7
minutes to find a winner. If a winner is not found within that stipulated time, penalties would be
taken. The winning team stays in the netted up field, to await their next opponents. Usually a
group of friends and acquaintances would appoint an ‘organizer’ amongst themselves to make a
reservation for the pitch.
Costs range from $60/hour to approximately $100/hour; depending on the time chosen. Bibs to
differentiate the opposing teams are provided by the company which rents out the pitch. Soccer
balls of the right size and standard are also provided at no extra cost. At places such as the Stadio
at Khalsa, a four-cubicle toilet, washing machine and changing area are part of their facilities.
Wireless access and a café serving refreshments and thirst quenchers are also present. Large
rotary fans cool the players, and high tempo music adds to the already high adrenaline in the
players system.
Large banners with famous soccer players such as Fernado Torres and Frank Lampard surround the
caged area. Sports conglomerates Adidas and Nike usually sponsor these banners. With so much
inspiration that can be channeled from the current 2010 World Cup it is no wonder that the pitches
have seen a rise in bookings as many prefer to sweat it out at night when there is no sun glaring in
