2. A clean school does more than promote a healthy environment. School
cleanliness also plays a role in the success of the students. According to a
study co-sponsored by International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA)
and conducted through the Association of Physical Plant Administrators’
(APPA) Center for Facilities Research, a correlation exists between the
academic achievements of students and the cleanliness of school
facilities.
Students Want Their School Clean
Researchers gathered students coming from 20 institutions to participate
in a 20-question survey. The results showed that around 88 percent of
the 1,481 students surveyed stated that the lack of cleanliness becomes a
distraction. About 84 percent of students mentioned that they want
“ordinary tidiness” or “orderly spotlessness” as their standards of
cleanliness to establish a positive learning environment.
3. The survey also revealed that 78 percent said that the cleanliness of
school affects their health. They added that the lack of sanitation
promotes higher stress levels and increases rodent and bug infestations,
spreads germs, and affects allergies.
Strategies to Keep Schools Tidy
Schools can improve student performance and cut down absenteeism
when they do their part of creating a clean environment for students. An
article by CleanLink, an information resource website for sanitary supply
distributors, provided these strategies to help schools keep their facilities
in top condition:
Prevent the Spread of Bacteria –
Schools can implement a range of
infection prevention tools, such as
hands-free towel dispensers,
automated flushing systems, and
antimicrobial soaps to stop bacteria
from spreading.
Clean Safely – Schools should make
safe cleaning a priority when
selecting cleaning products and
equipment. They can consider, for
instance, products with Green Seal-
approved chemicals.
Improve Air Quality – Placing mats
on high-traffic zones helps prevent
dirt, dust, and other particulates
from entering the building.
4. Alan Bigger, president of APPA, remarked that cutting back on
cleaning services negatively impact the primary customers of the
school – the students. They may go elsewhere if the school is unable
to provide an environment where they feel comfortable.
