Title: Blood Pressure screenings and Vaccination/Diabetes/General information
Objectives: To provide free blood pressure screenings and consequently to educate the patients on the
importance of proper blood pressure. Additionally, to stress the importance/inform about the benefits of
vaccinations and to answer any health related questions that the patient may have.
Location: Walgreens pharmacy (1973 Forest Ave, Staten Island, NY, 10303)
Personnel: Preceptor/Pharmacy manager (Dr. Linda Mai-Molina) and staff Pharmacist (Dr. Luba
Soroker). If required, assistance from the technicians.
Time frame: Weekly intervention (8/26, 9/2, 9/9, 9/16, 9/23) at 11 am for 1-2 hours. The intervention will
include BP screenings with 5 – 15 minutes spent on counseling. Also, I will answer any general health
related question(s) that the patient may have.
Advertising: To promote awareness of the BP screenings, vaccinations, etc. I made a sign and attached
it at the entrance to the store. Outside of the pharmacy, I set up a table set with BP machines and cuffs,
pamphlet with information on vaccinations and diabetes, and pill organizers.
Post project summery
The project that I performed was very successful. The reason for the success, I believe, was due
to the fact that I positioned the booth next to the pharmacy clinic as well as being vocal about the services
that I was providing. For every customer that I saw come into the pharmacy, I asked if they wanted a free
BP screening. If they said yes, I gave them a BP screening and then told them their results and what they
meant. At the same time, I asked them if they had diabetes. If they said yes, I engaged them more about
the subject. Additionally, I provided the patients with information about vaccinations and asked them if
they had any other questions for me.
After speaking with some of the patients about the booth that I had, they all told me that this was
a great idea and very helpful. They said that my friendliness and eagerness to help and inform them was
a positive attribute. In addition, the service that I provided gave the patients a lot of information about their
disease state (BP, diabetes, etc) and vaccinations.
Conclusion
During the course of my rotation, I witnessed the immense importance of the pharmacist in the
health and wellness of the community. This was due to the fact that the patients becomes very
comfortable with the pharmacist, since they see them on a regular basis, and therefore they are more
prone to take any advice that the pharmacist gives them. Consequently, this demonstrates the immense
responsibility that the pharmacist has, when it comes to patient-pharmacist relationship. Aside from
providing medication related advice to the patients, the pharmacist also works with the insurance
companies and doctors’ offices to make sure that the patient gets the correct medication, correct dosage,
correct formulation, and receives the medication at the lowest price. Consequently, this improves patient
adherence and makes them more comfortable taking the medication.
After this rotation, I have a profound respect for what community pharmacists do. Aside from
being the drug experts, they deal with patients, doctors, and insurance companies. Even with this
immense responsibility, they are able to accomplish all their tasks effectively. After seeing all of this, I
would like to become a community pharmacist and I would hope to emulate the qualities that I witnessed
with the amazing pharmacist that I worked with.
