This is my personal testimonial for YASMIIN ATHIRAH BTE MOHD SOOM. I have had
the pleasure to be the advisor to the Republic Polytechnic (RP) Student Council.
Yasmiin served as the Honorary Secretary in the Executive Committee of the 12th
Student Council from June 2014 to May 2015. Yasmiin concurrently served as the Vice
President of the International Club over the same period.
I found Yasmiin to be a humble, committed and passionate student leader, who was
quietly influential. She easily commanded the respect of her peers, and was someone
both students and staff looked up to as someone they could count on. Her easy going
and fun loving personality made her a joy to work with!
As Honorary Secretary of the 12th
Student Council, Yasmiin played an integral part in all
administrative matters involving the council’s events and activities. She dedicated much
of her time to serving the RP Student Union, and has played an important part in
planning and executing projects spearheaded by the RP Student Council.
Yasmiin played a major role in several school events, which included the RP Open
House 2015 and Orientation Programme 2015. She led the committee that coordinated
RP’s National Day Observance Ceremony in 2014.
Yasmiin represented RP in dialogue sessions such as the One People Forum which
focused on integration issues and a discussion with the polytechnic’s Senior
Management on changes to the RP academic structure. She was also part of the
student feedback team on MOE’s Skills Future initiative.
Yasmiin has also represented RP at several external events, which included a dialogue
session with MENDAKI, and the Budget Day Experience in Parliament in February
2015.
Her most distinguished honour was being nominated to represent RP at the Lying in
State Vigil during the funeral of Singapore’s founding father, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, in
March 2015.
After stepping down from office in May 2015, Yasmiin continued to serve as a mentor to
her juniors. She is well respected by her peers and is someone her juniors look up to.
2. Despite her heavy commitment in Co-Curricular Activities, Yasmiin has shown maturity
and responsibility to juggle this with her academic commitments. She has done well in
her diploma programme, and is held in high regard by her Lecturers in RP’s School of
Hospitality.
It has been my honor to have had the opportunity to work with Yasmiin, and to be her
advisor in the RP Student Council. Yasmiin has the potential to do extremely well in her
future endeavors, and I wish her the very best.
