2. What is ABS ?
1. It is the system that allows the wheels to continue
interacting with the road surface while braking and
avoid skidding.
2. It helps the driver to maintain the steering ability
and avoid skidding while braking.
3. Main work of ABS is to provide the direction stabil-
-ty and allows steering with maximizing braking.
Slipping of wheel Stability Decreases
3. Motivation For ABS Development
• Under Hard braking, an ideal braking system should :-
# Provide the shortest stopping distances on all the surfaces
# Maintain the Vehicle Stability.
4. COMPONENTS REQUIRED:-
SPEED SENSOR: PROVIDE THE INFORMATION WHEN THE
WHEEL IS ABOUT TO LOCK UP.
PUMP: IT IS USED TO PUT THE PRESSURE BACK APPLIED
WHILE BRAKING.
CONTROLLER: ECU(Engine control unit-electronic unit
controls a series of actuators) TYPE UNIT IN THE VEHICLE
WHICH RECIEVES INFORMATION FROM EACH INDIVIDUAL
WHEEL SPEED SENSOR.
5. WORKING:
•ABS uses speed sensor to determine if one or more
wheels are lock up during braking. If a wheel tries
to lock up, a series of hydraulic valves reduce the
braking on that wheel. This prevents skidding and
allows us to maintain the steering control.
•It reduces the pressure to the brake until it sees
acceleration.
6. BENEFITS:
# CONTROL OF STEERING: Increases steering ability and
vehicle stability during braking.
# Fail-Safe electrical system: If the electrical system fails
ABS is shut off.
# Traction Control: It is that optional feature that controls the
excessive wheel spin during acceleration.
# ABS indicator lamp: Informs the driver or technician
that an ABS fault has occurred.
7. HOW TO USE ABS ?
• APPLY STEADY AND CONSTANT PRESSURE-
DON’T TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE BROKE
PEDAL UNTILL THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED AND
DON’T PUMP THE BRAKE.
8. CONCLUSION:
• STATISTICS show that approximately
40% accidents today are due to the
skidding.
• These Problems commonly occur in on
vehicle with conventional brake system
which can be avoided by Adding device
called ABS.
• If there is an ABS failure, the system will
revert to the normal brake operation.
Normally ABS warning light will turn on
and let the driver know there is a failure.
