Dear Nobody
By Berlie Doherty

  Yahya Choy
The subject of matter
• The subject of matter in Berlie Doherty’s “Dear
  Nobody” is love.
• This is seen on page ninety seven in may
  chapter.
“Helen and I tried to spend all our time
together after that week or so after the clinic were
the best we ever had together. It was as if we were
one person, bound up in in each other‟s present. The
future and the past were outer space”
“it will be all right,” I kept saying. “I „ll stay with
   you, whatever happens.”

it is on second paragraph of thirty eight page.

• Love of family between mother and children
“two hundred million sperm tried to reach you, and this
is the one that made it. Nothing will ever be exactly like
it again, ever in the world. It is unique. It is me in
you, Helen, and you in me. Please don‟t destroy it. I
     love you, whatever you do.”
The major character
• There are two major characters. They are
christopher and helen because they are a couple
  who describe their lives.
• Helen is friendly and calm. It is based on ninety
  eight page.
“When I first saw Helen I liked her because she looked
friendly and calm; there is a kind of steadiness
about her that tells you she won‟t go off into sulks or
   anything”
• Chris is loyal with helen. The proof is on ninety
  seven page

“Helen and I tried to spend all our time
together after that week or so after the clinic
were the best we ever had together. It was as if
we were one person, bound up in in each other‟s
present. The future and the past were outer
   space”
The conflict
• The main conflict in the story is the pregnancy of
Helen who is still teenager and the decision of
abortion is taken by her mother to avoid ashamed in
  society.
• It is seen on the last paragraph of seventy four page
“And II didn‟t want the child, you see. I didn‟t ask for it, and I
didn‟t believe it when I found out I was pregnant. At that time it
seemed like the worst thing in the world that could happen to me.
So I went to the doctor, and he was very sympathetic. I believe I
was pretty low, you know, with Mac leaving, and unhappy. And he
asked me if I wanted an abortion and I said yes.”
symbol
• There is a symbol in the story. It is a horse
  (stallion).
• “I found myself at the back of the queue. I needed to be at the front
for this. I pressed my horse into a trot so I could overtake the
others. A woman rider coming out from the stables to join us
shouted to me to keep in, and I fell, but I didn‟t. she was quite away
behind. I was staring straight ahead. I was tense and sure of
  myself, but I wasn‟t afraid”

• It is on second paragraph of sixty six page
Theme
• Free sex in teenager will bring bad effect
“think of your future. It‟s your future. You mustn‟t throw it
away,” and I shook my head, my ayes too full to see anything. My
future is a deep, black well. Whatever I see in it frightens me. Mum
 touched my hear”
it is on eighty two page
• Abortion is one of the criminal and not good
  solution.
“And I did not want the child, you see. I didn‟t ask for it, and I did
not want it. I couldn‟t believe it when I found out I was pregnant. “
• “and then, just when I‟d given up and I was about to go out of the
room she said,” If you must know, Helen, I am the one who‟s
  illegimate, not you..
I was born out of wedlock, as they say. Born in sin. And I‟ll never
  forgive my mother for that.”

• It is on sixty four page
▫ “ after I left helen I started to run back home. I was numb. A
baby‟s not. Something and nothing. Somebody and nobody. Now
and for ever. Life began three thousand six hundred million
years ago. Life began in January. And I was the father. I tried to
wake my self up to the sound of that word, and I couldn‟t. it
was meaningless. It meant I was responsible. It meant
Newcastle slipping away from me like a vanishing dream. I
felt like a mouse crouching into a tiny hole. I felt the mousy air
      suffocating me”
