Letter of Recommendation
!Dear Selection Committee,
!I am Fan Yinliang from the Department of Industrial Design Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua
University. I have been teaching Ms.Jiang Xiaomeng in several academic courses including
Fundamentals: 3D, Composite Communication and Ideology of Display Design. When Xiaomeng
asked me for a letter of recommendation, I agreed without any hesitation. I believe her creative
thinking, excellent communication and fast learning abilities all make her a perfect candidate for your
distinguished program.
!Xiaomeng was an active thinker with creative perspectives. In Composite Communication, we had a
project assignment for 15 students and the best three would be chosen to compete in the Tokyo
exhibition with the theme “Tokyo. City. Museum”. In the initial research, Xiaomeng accurately
captured the key points in visualization, and her preliminary investigation and research were well-
directed and thought-provoking. What was more, she chose the sidewalk of the airport as the site of her
exhibition to express the feeling of stroll to match the character of the Tokyo city. The curator and
judges spoke highly of her work, taking her design as one of the most ingenious among all the work
submitted by the class. So they picked her work for the exhibition
!Ms.Jiang also excelled in class with her excellent communication skill and language proficiency. In
Ideology of Display Design, I invited Harry Vetter, a professor from University of Dusseldorf,
Germany to give a one week course on spatial design. All the other students expressed their ideas in
Chinese and I have to help to translate them into German. She was the only one in class that used
English to communicate directly with the German Professor. She had no problem communicating even
the professional issues, putting forward questions concerning the design plan and retelling from time to
time to clarify what the professor said in case of any misunderstanding. The professor finally
commented that she could quickly identify three-dimensional solutions for expression and exploration.
This high appraisal was inseparable from her effective communication.
!Last but not least, I appreciate Xiaomeng for her adept ability to learn. When she was a freshman, I
assigned a task of building a model to depict a city, which was not at all easy for students just starting
to learn design. Xiaomeng chose New Deli and tried to work it out through constant modeling. Each of
her model in the process was an improvement. It was a great progress that she eventually abandoned
the concrete method of building the dome after the fashion of Taj Mahal and shifted to leveraging laws
underlying abstract forms to reconstruct the work to bring a sense of mystery.
!!To sum up, I am convinced that your program would definitely help Xiaomeng become a good
designer and she would also make great contributions to you as well. If there is anything of Xiaomeng
you would like to know from me, please contact me. I would be glad to help.
!Yours Sincerely,
FAN Yinliang
