I am originally from Bearsden in Glasgow
where I lived until I was 18 before moving to
Edinburgh to study at Edinburgh Napier
University. I come from a family that strongly
believes that you should enjoy what you do in
life, but whatever you enjoy doing you should
work hard at it. Over my life I feel that I have a
stuck very close to these ideals,
Outside of education I participated in many
activities. The main example being swimming in
which I competed at a high level for 12 years. This
taught me much about commitment and pushing
myself and this reflects greatly in my mindset
now. I have also spent many years working as
a lifeguard and swimming instructor which has
further taught me the importance teamwork
and communication while improving my ability
to work under pressure.
In early 2015 I took part in an exchange program
to Zhengzhou in China for just over 4 months,
this educated greatly about different cultures
and environments. The whole experience vastly
improved my design knowledge as well as
improving my design process. As a result of
travelling and living in China it provided my with
an insight into the design market and what
people want and need in their products. With
China being one of the main countries and
economies with many design jobs and design
opportunities, my experience puts me ahead of
most others.
After graduating university in 2016 I secured a
internship place at matrix design located in
shenzhen, china. Matrix design is a company
focused the innovation and production on
electronic products, in working here over the
course of 3 months it taught me a whole new
range of skills sets. From the use of new
software and their design process and ethos
to learning how to work more efficiently
when being very much out of my comfort zone.
The overall experience I gained from working in
china is something that I will never forget and I
fell it has added overwhelmingly to the
quality of my design and myself as a person
