Social Problems and Issues in Pakistan
Ethnic Pressures Pakistan's 180 million people are divided into five main ethnic groups: Punjabi (44.7 percent), Pashtun (15.4 percent), Sindhi (14.1
percent), Muhajirs (7.6 percent), and Balochi (3.6 percent). The country is divided into four provinces: Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as North–West Frontier Province, or NWFP). In addition, there are the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA),
Pakistan–administered Kashmir, and Gilgit–Baltistan. Historically, the dominant role played by Punjab, which is home to over 55 percent of the
population and provides the bulk of the army and bureaucracy, has caused much resentment among the other three provinces. There had been little

Today, as population pressures mount, a surging youth population is expected to test leaders' ability to provide for their people while ushering in
needed reforms (roughly 58 percent of Pakistan's population is under twenty–four, according to the UN Population Division). High illiteracy rates, poor
access to education and healthcare, and widening gender and socioeconomic gaps are expected to add to the state's challenges, while fueling the
narrative of militant groups seeking to use public disenfranchisement as broader recruiting tools. According to the United Nations, more than 60
percent of Pakistanis live on less than $2 a day, making Pakistan one of the world's poorest states. Social Indicators Health Life Expectancy at Birth:

Inflation, Unemployment and Poverty: Still Major Problems of Pakistan
Zoha Siddique

Since Pakistan came into being, it's going through hard times. From newly born country to getting sixty four year old country, sometimes it has given
sacrifices and sometimes remained victim of inapt political system. For the long time, it is facing number of challenges and conspiracies which has
weakened its foundations and so is the structure. Therefore, many social and economic evils have taken birth in the lap of Pakistan; with the passage of
time, the roots are getting deep hold. Every citizen of an independent nation has a right over basic necessities of life but unfortunately, Pakistani nation

Unfortunately, in Pakistan, these core problems have never undergone such a planning process.
Government has never invited foreign investment for the production of basic goods. Agriculture sector, on which the major industries rely for the
raw material has not been given sufficient subsidies. The major rise in the prices is because of the increasing prices of oil (as increased prices of oil
increase the cost of production), but no such steps have been taken to control the oil prices. Domestic productions at less cost of production will not
only make the availability of goods much easier but Aggregate Supply will also increase, and domestic industry will get developed.
Inflation is one of the obstacles on the way of development. In Pakistan, it has squeezed the major part of the population. It needs to be controlled by
strategic planning. Domestic production should be encouraged instead of imports; investment should be given preference in consumer goods instead of
luxuries, Agriculture sector should be given subsidies, foreign investment should be attracted, and developed countries should be requested for
financial and managerial assistance. And lastly a strong monitoring system should be established on different levels in order to have a sound evaluation
of the process at every stage. Pakistan is far behind from rest of the world due to high inflation and unemployment. With high inflation and
unemployment, people are unable to

Poverty By Anup Shah: Article Analysis
Poverty
One social issue that society faces is poverty. In the article, Causes of Poverty, the author Anup Shah describes what poverty is.
"Poverty is the state for the majority of the world's people and nations." (Shah, 2014, September 28,). Another definitions as per (Kozier et al., 2014,

Introduction
Pakistan was established in 1947 and since its inception; it has been surrounded by countless issues, some of which are confined to ill–formed/missing
infrastructure, insufficient refined resources, barren or obsolete factories and technologies, the Kashmir controversy and other fronts also involving an
ever–ready enemy to underscore its efforts towards progress. Despite being rich in natural resources,...show more content...
It is interesting to note that due to international interference and manipulation, the very same people that we have previously labeled as corrupt,
blamed and rebuked for their acts, have come back to govern us after a couple of years and the very same people have welcome them with open arms,
representing the inconsistency and apprehension instilled in our social, economic and political framework. A common English saying goes as "fool me
once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me".
This has also been one of the key reasons as to why the political process in Pakistan has not prospered so far into any rational coalition. Soon after its
inception the sincere and loyal politicians were removed from the main stream and dupes and rubber stamps were put into place, where the final
authority has relied upon decisions made outside the country.
Over Population, Unemployment & Inflation
On the one hand we have had years of low GDP growth and on the other a high population growth combined to place Pakistan in a situation where the
stability of its economic pie has not been increasing fast enough to facilitate and extricate the country from the poverty trap it was inflicted upon in it's
making. To compound the problem, recent years have seen food prices and utility tariffs shooting up by a wide margin, making it increasingly difficult

Overpopulation in Pakistan
As we know that the economic development of a country depends on various factors such as natural resources, capital and human resources. Human
resources have fundamental importance because without them, the natural resources can not be exploited but overpopulation causes adverse effects on
the economy.
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze the impacts of the impacts of overpopulation on the economic development of Pakistan.

In order to see the role of population in the economic development, we will consider the world population and growth rate in comparison to that of
Pakistan. The qualitative aspects of population, major factors affecting population growth, Malthusian population trap, the problems created by...show

We shall deal with the educational factors as an affect of overpopulation rather than the cause.
Growth rate of population:
The growth rate of population is the focal point the economic development of a country. The growth rate of Pakistan is 2.09 %.( See table 3.1 & fig
3.3).The growth rate reached its peak in 1972 and it has been continuously declining over the years.
Death rate:
Pakistan's extremely high rate of population growth is caused by a falling death rate. In 1950 the mortality rate was twenty–seven per 1,000; by 2008 it
has fallen to 8.23 deaths per 1000(see table 3.2).
Infant mortality rate:
The decrease in infant mortality rate is also a contributing factor. Figure for infant mortality has always been disputed in Pakistan; it was estimated to
be 136 in 1962–65. By 1996–97 it had been estimated to be somewhere around 92–100. The infant mortality rate is 70.45 per 1000 in 2008(see table
3.4).It is indicative of poor medical facilities, inadequate child health care and ignorance among the family members. Maternal
Mortality rate was 340 per 100,000 live births in 1990: it is still the same if not higher as reported by some organizations.
Life expectancy:
The life expectancy of both males and females has continued to increase over the years. Whereas in 1965 women in Pakistan lived to the age of 44.5
years, in 1992 women were expected to live 17 years more. (see table 3.5).

Poverty in Pakistan: Causes and Consequences
Poverty, a multidimensional global phenomenon, as defined by World Bank is an income level below some minimum threshold deemed necessary to
achieve basic needs. This minimum level is usually called the "poverty line". The things required to satisfy basic needs are highly time and society
dependent. Therefore, poverty lines vary from country to country as each country defines and sets the poverty line limit according to its own level
of development, societal norms and values. But the contents of the needs are more or less the same everywhere. Hunger, lack of shelter, being sick
and unable to see a doctor, no access to school and education, joblessness, fear of the future are all the constituents of the Poverty. It also
encompasses lack of opportunities, expression, representation and freedom. Pakistan is a low income developing country. In Pakistan, like other
developing countries, poverty is grave concern for the government and policy makers. Pakistan, after its independence, has experienced highs and
lows of economic growth with increase and reduction in poverty. There is also a big difference in poverty levels between rural and urban places in
Pakistan. This difference in poverty levels is due to the structure of Pakistan's economy and the way this economic structure changed over the course of
time and with changing regimes. Economic policies shape the economic structure of a country and in the case of Pakistan different economic policies

cultivate a number of different foods. About 28% of Pakistan's total land area is under cultivation. Pakistan boasts one of the largest irrigation systems
in the world. The most important crops are cotton, wheat, rice, sugarcane, maize, sorghum, millets, pulses, oil seeds, barley, fruits and vegetables.

The public health infrastructure in Pakistan includes 965 tertiary and secondary hospitals and a total of 13052 first level care facilities (Nishtar et al.,
2013). Population to health facility ratios improved from 28 971:1 in 1947 to 12 357:1 currently (Nishtar et al., 2013). Several studies found that
unqualified practitioners are responsible for providing up to 50% of the health care in the community especially rural and urban slums. A recent survey
showed that only half of the children with ARI approaches a trained health providers for treatment (Iqbal et al., 2010)
Due to low budget allocations to the health sector in Pakistan, the public health sector faces many challenges to provide quality health care to a
diverse population. The health care cost in both private and public sector is pushing vulnerable population groups further into a poverty trap (Rehman
et al, 2014). Parents of under 5 year children are usually compel to seek care at expensive private hospitals due to lack of trust and uncaring attitudes at
government hospitals (Rehman et al, 2014).
The healthcare seeking behaviours for a child with ARI were evaluated by Iqbal et al. (2010) in Pakistan. This showed a significant delay before the
sick child with ARI is brought to the appropriate physician. The average child in the study was sick for 3.7 days before attending the clinic of the
doctor. This delay was associated with factors like use of self–medication, home remedies, inability to identify the illness

Human Resource Development in Pakistan
THE CHALLENGES OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT IN PAKISTAN
Dr. Nasim Ashraf
Abstract
This paper explores the challenges posed in the area of human development in Pakistan. Pakistan has made little progress in key indicators of human
development – education and health – due to years of neglect in policy making and implementation issues. Based on available data, it is highlighted
that despite achieving a respectable growth rate, Pakistan has not been able to reduce poverty as other nations have (with similar or even lower levels
of GDP per capita). Poor human development has also hampered economic growth. The paper brings out the principal challenges of human resource
development in Pakistan, which are mainly the untrained,...show more content...

In a world of six billion people, one billion have 80 percent of the income and five billion have less than 20 percent. This issue of global imbalance is at
the core of the challenge to scale up poverty reduction.
Case of Pakistan: Poverty has many dimensions in Pakistan. People have not only low incomes but they also are suffering from lack of access over
basic needs. The major challenge of today is poverty reduction. In Pakistan, Poverty Reduction Strategy was launched by the government in 2001 in
response to the rising trend in poverty during 1990s. It consisted of the following five elements:–
(a) Accelerating economic growth and maintaining macroeconomic stability.
(b) Investing in human capital.
(c) Augmenting targeted interventions.
(d) Expanding social safety nets.
(e) Improving governance. The net outcome of interactions among these five elements would be the expected reduction in transitory and chronic
poverty on a sustained basis. The reduction in poverty and improvement in social indicators and living conditions of the society are being monitored
frequently through large– scale household surveys in order to gauge their progress in meeting the targets set by Pakistan for achieving the seven UN

The economy of Pakistan is the 27th largest economy in the world in terms of purchasing power, and the 48th largest in absolute dollar terms. GDP
growth, spurred by gains in the industrial and service sectors, remained in the 6–8% range in 2004–06. Poverty is widespread in Pakistan and is
particularly predominant in rural areas. Nearly two thirds of the population, and 80 per cent of the country's poor people, live in rural parts of the
country. In 2004–2005 the government of Pakistan estimated that almost 24 percent of the population of Pakistan live below the poverty line.

Critical Situation of Poverty in Pakistan
"A person is considered poor if his or her income level falls below some minimum level necessary to meet basic needs. This minimum level is usually
called the poverty line".(Guenon n.d.)
Keeping in mind the situation of Pakistan in last couple of years, the initiative has been taken by the Government of Pakistan which commits for better
access to critical public services for the poor. In addition to the poverty reduction strategies prepared by the Government major improvements were
required in education, health and other basic necessities (including food and water etc.) sectors. Moreover, two major initiatives were taken by
Government – Khushal Pakistan (a comprehensive poverty intervention) and Khushali Bank (a microcredit bank) – as countrywide efforts in order to
address poverty.
Some Facts And Figures about Poverty in Pakistan
65.5 percent population of Pakistan earns less than 2$ per day (UNDP research) which shows that most of the people living in Pakistan are having very
few necessities of life. Majority of Pakistan is living a miserable life below poverty line.

of Punjab's population is victim to poverty and deprivation.

The Issue of Poverty As a Whole in Pakistan
Poverty and suffering is considered not out of the norm for many families in Pakistan. Many of them have had to make enormous sacrifices in order
to survive in these hard times. As seen in the previous paragraph children who are to sacrifice their education to help the family during times of
poverty, may never really be able to receive an education later. For most families that are in the same situation like Rafiq and his family, the basic
necessities such as food and water that others take for granted are now considered the highest priority in their lives. Though native–born families are the
ones who suffer the most in poverty in Pakistan, there are also outsiders who suffer just as much. One example is the children of Afghan refugees from
Afghanistan. During the Afghan War, many families in that region have been separated or killed during battles and abductions conducted by the
terrorist group Al–Qaeda. This group has threatened almost virtually everyone in the country that if they don't listen and obey their rules, they will have
them executed or tortured. Thus, many families have packed their belongings and have made long treks out of the war torn nation. Once, they come
into Pakistan, they expect their experience to be better than the one in Afghanistan. And to a certain extent, some of that may be true. However, once
they become integrated in the society, they realize that it is very hard to find a place to work.
Afghan children are also put in the same situation

Problems Faced by Pakistan
PROBLEMS FACED BY PAKISTAN,RECOMMENDATION FOR ITS SOLUTION

In the context of Pakistan, owing to the fact that it is a developing nation, there is no wonder that it is engulfed with a number of social and
economical problems. The real issue is not the presence of these problems in society because, there is no concept of an ideal society in the world.
Every country in the world has its own set of socio–economic problems. The main issue is the extent and intensity of the socio–economic problems of
Pakistan which have soared to alarming levels.
Pakistan is today facing the most critical problems of its history. Economy is terrible, law & order is deteriorating, shortage of water, electricity and

Stock Exchanges also depict a true picture of economic meltdown. Instable political system, dictatorship in its worse form and non–effective
democracy badly affect the rates of stocks listed on the three stock exchanges of Pakistan. During this year, many times Karachi Stock Exchange has
plunged to its lowest point in the history of Pakistan.
Rate of inflation was never a two–digit figure in Pakistan, but in recent years it has seen an unprecedented increase. Prices of all consumer products in
general and food products in particular are rocket high. In contrast, purchasing power of masses is at an all–time low.
Northern areas of Pakistan have been a place of great tourist attraction. This contributed to foreign exchange. Tourism Industry was one of the booming
industries of Pakistan. Besides attracting foreign exchange, it also provided employment to local people. Nevertheless, war on terrorism has served as
a serious blow to the tourism industry of Pakistan.
Due to war on terror, local people of war–ridden areas are migrating to other areas of Pakistan. Country has seen the largest migration since
independence in 1947. This large influx of people and their rehabilitation is an economic burden for Pakistan. This unproductive lot of people is a
growing economic problem of Pakistan.

Issues of unstable governance are directly related to the difficulties confronted by developing nations (BU 2014). The government plays a crucial role
in uplifting a country and its development. It can achieve this by managing the country and its problems in a decently proficient manner, taking the
right decisions at the right time, imposing rules and regulations and by setting up viable strategies to fight the obstacles coming in its way of
advancement. Most of the developing countries tend to face similar problems and require serious government reforms in order to defeat them.
Surprisingly, Pakistan is among one of those countries that are tormented by issues such as poverty, illiteracy, terrorism, civil war and overpopulation.
This paper will shed light on some of the challenges faced by Pakistan as an impoverished nation and also provide some suggestions on how these
issues can be tackled.
Pakistan is an Islamic state located in South Asia that covers an area of 796,095 square kilometers. It shares border with India, Afghanistan, Iran and
China and a marine border with Oman. It came into existence as an independent nation in 1947 and since then, it has been encompassed by incalculable

Social Problems And Issues In Pakistan

  • 1. Social Problems and Issues in Pakistan Ethnic Pressures Pakistan's 180 million people are divided into five main ethnic groups: Punjabi (44.7 percent), Pashtun (15.4 percent), Sindhi (14.1 percent), Muhajirs (7.6 percent), and Balochi (3.6 percent). The country is divided into four provinces: Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as North–West Frontier Province, or NWFP). In addition, there are the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Pakistan–administered Kashmir, and Gilgit–Baltistan. Historically, the dominant role played by Punjab, which is home to over 55 percent of the population and provides the bulk of the army and bureaucracy, has caused much resentment among the other three provinces. There had been little support for the...show more content... Today, as population pressures mount, a surging youth population is expected to test leaders' ability to provide for their people while ushering in needed reforms (roughly 58 percent of Pakistan's population is under twenty–four, according to the UN Population Division). High illiteracy rates, poor access to education and healthcare, and widening gender and socioeconomic gaps are expected to add to the state's challenges, while fueling the narrative of militant groups seeking to use public disenfranchisement as broader recruiting tools. According to the United Nations, more than 60 percent of Pakistanis live on less than $2 a day, making Pakistan one of the world's poorest states. • 2. Inflation, Unemployment and Poverty: Still Major Problems of Pakistan Zoha Siddique Forman Christian College University Since Pakistan came into being, it's going through hard times. From newly born country to getting sixty four year old country, sometimes it has given sacrifices and sometimes remained victim of inapt political system. For the long time, it is facing number of challenges and conspiracies which has weakened its foundations and so is the structure. Therefore, many social and economic evils have taken birth in the lap of Pakistan; with the passage of time, the roots are getting deep hold. Every citizen of an independent nation has a right over basic necessities of life but unfortunately, Pakistani nation ...show more content... Unfortunately, in Pakistan, these core problems have never undergone such a planning process. Government has never invited foreign investment for the production of basic goods. Agriculture sector, on which the major industries rely for the raw material has not been given sufficient subsidies. The major rise in the prices is because of the increasing prices of oil (as increased prices of oil increase the cost of production), but no such steps have been taken to control the oil prices. Domestic productions at less cost of production will not only make the availability of goods much easier but Aggregate Supply will also increase, and domestic industry will get developed. Inflation is one of the obstacles on the way of development. In Pakistan, it has squeezed the major part of the population. It needs to be controlled by strategic planning. Domestic production should be encouraged instead of imports; investment should be given preference in consumer goods instead of luxuries, Agriculture sector should be given subsidies, foreign investment should be attracted, and developed countries should be requested for financial and managerial assistance. And lastly a strong monitoring system should be established on different levels in order to have a sound evaluation of the process at every stage. Pakistan is far behind from rest of the world due to high inflation and unemployment. With high inflation and unemployment, people are unable to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

We shall deal with the educational factors as an affect of overpopulation rather than the cause. Growth rate of population: The growth rate of population is the focal point the economic development of a country. The growth rate of Pakistan is 2.09 %.( See table 3.1 & fig 3.3).The growth rate reached its peak in 1972 and it has been continuously declining over the years. Death rate: Pakistan's extremely high rate of population growth is caused by a falling death rate. In 1950 the mortality rate was twenty–seven per 1,000; by 2008 it has fallen to 8.23 deaths per 1000(see table 3.2). Infant mortality rate: The decrease in infant mortality rate is also a contributing factor. Figure for infant mortality has always been disputed in Pakistan; it was estimated to be 136 in 1962–65. By 1996–97 it had been estimated to be somewhere around 92–100. The infant mortality rate is 70.45 per 1000 in 2008(see table 3.4).It is indicative of poor medical facilities, inadequate child health care and ignorance among the family members. Maternal Mortality rate was 340 per 100,000 live births in 1990: it is still the same if not higher as reported by some organizations.

  • 8. Poverty in Pakistan: Causes and Consequences Poverty, a multidimensional global phenomenon, as defined by World Bank is an income level below some minimum threshold deemed necessary to achieve basic needs. This minimum level is usually called the "poverty line". The things required to satisfy basic needs are highly time and society dependent. Therefore, poverty lines vary from country to country as each country defines and sets the poverty line limit according to its own level of development, societal norms and values. But the contents of the needs are more or less the same everywhere. Hunger, lack of shelter, being sick and unable to see a doctor, no access to school and education, joblessness, fear of the future are all the constituents of the Poverty. It also encompasses lack of opportunities, expression, representation and freedom. Pakistan is a low income developing country. In Pakistan, like other developing countries, poverty is grave concern for the government and policy makers. Pakistan, after its independence, has experienced highs and lows of economic growth with increase and reduction in poverty. There is also a big difference in poverty levels between rural and urban places in Pakistan. This difference in poverty levels is due to the structure of Pakistan's economy and the way this economic structure changed over the course of time and with changing regimes. A recent survey showed that only half of the children with ARI approaches a trained health providers for treatment (Iqbal et al., 2010) Due to low budget allocations to the health sector in Pakistan, the public health sector faces many challenges to provide quality health care to a diverse population. The health care cost in both private and public sector is pushing vulnerable population groups further into a poverty trap (Rehman et al, 2014). Parents of under 5 year children are usually compel to seek care at expensive private hospitals due to lack of trust and uncaring attitudes at government hospitals (Rehman et al, 2014). The healthcare seeking behaviours for a child with ARI were evaluated by Iqbal et al. (2010) in Pakistan. Pakistan has made little progress in key indicators of human development – education and health – due to years of neglect in policy making and implementation issues. Based on available data, it is highlighted that despite achieving a respectable growth rate, Pakistan has not been able to reduce poverty as other nations have (with similar or even lower levels of GDP per capita). In a world of six billion people, one billion have 80 percent of the income and five billion have less than 20 percent. This issue of global imbalance is at the core of the challenge to scale up poverty reduction. Case of Pakistan: Poverty has many dimensions in Pakistan. People have not only low incomes but they also are suffering from lack of access over basic needs. The major challenge of today is poverty reduction. In Pakistan, Poverty Reduction Strategy was launched by the government in 2001 in response to the rising trend in poverty during 1990s. It consisted of the following five elements:– (a) Accelerating economic growth and maintaining macroeconomic stability. (b) Investing in human capital. (c) Augmenting targeted interventions. (d) Expanding social safety nets. (e) Improving governance. The net outcome of interactions among these five elements would be the expected reduction in transitory and chronic poverty on a sustained basis. The reduction in poverty and improvement in social indicators and living conditions of the society are being monitored frequently through large– scale household surveys in order to gauge their progress in meeting the targets set by Pakistan for achieving the seven UN Millennium Development Goals by Get more content on HelpWriting.net
