Assume you are an investigative reporter for a major publication (magazine or
newspaper) who has been assigned to research an important issues (ethnic, racial, or
gender) that are evidencing problems and affecting people in a local area, workplace, or a
specific part of the world. (Note: a list of possible topics is provided, but you may select
another one not on the list. However, it must be approved by your professor.) Your goal
will be to provide an in-depth analysis and put a human face on the issue, the problems
being evidenced, and proposing changes to bring about improvement for those affected.
You will report your analysis in a series of articles that the editor plans to publish in two
(2) major parts:
· Part I (Assignment 2) will focus on the history, current issues, and proposed
changes.
· Part 2 (Assignment 3) will include revisions to Part 1 (Assignment 2) and focus on
the benefits and challenges of the proposed changes as well as responses to the
challenges.
· Assignment 4 will require you to provide a summary in a PowerPoint presentation
for a meeting of the National Association of Journalists.
Your professor will act as your editor and provide guidance as you refine your topic area
and articles.
Assignment 1: Topic, Rationale, and Annotated Bibliography requires you to conduct
preliminary research and select one topic area for the series. This part is for your editor /
professor and is for background.
Possible Topics
1. Native American equality issues in the U.S.
2. African-American equality issues in the U.S.
3. Hispanic American equality issues in the U.S.
4. Gender equality issues in the U.S. (or specific workplace)
5. White ethnic American equality issues in the U.S.
6. Gender equality issues in a specific region (another country outside of U.S.)
7. Jewish American equality issues in the U.S.
8. Arab American equality issues in the U.S.
9. Asian-American equality issues in the U.S.
10. Assimilation and pluralism in the U.S.
11. Immigration issues in the U.S.
12. Ethnicity and racial identity issues in the U.S.
13. Ethnicity and racial issues in Brazil or South Africa
14. Ethnicity, racial, or language issues in Canada
15. Global issues from Chapter 16

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:
1. Identify one (1) topic area you would like to research for the series of articles. (The
topic area selectedshould involve problems for those affected.)
2. Provide a rationale with three (3) reasons for selecting the topic area.
3. Include an annotated bibliography of five (5) credible, reliable sources for the
selectedtopic area.
Note: Select credible, reliable references or sources as defined by your textbook. An
annotated bibliography includes a reference to the source and a four to six (4-6) sentence
description about the source. More sources will be required for the other parts of series of
articles or Parts 1 and 2.

your editor / professor) and focus on the benefits and challenges of the proposed
change(s) as well as responses to the challenges. Assignment 4 will require you to
provide a summary in a PowerPoint presentation for a meeting of the National
Association of Journalists.)

Write a 5-6 page (or 1,300 to 1,400 words approximately 275 words per page) paper in
which you:
1. Introduce the topic area with a quote, question, and / or statistic (from your credible
sources) with an overview and a thesis statement in the first one to two (1-2) paragraphs.
(Grab the reader’s interest.)
2. Explain three to five (3-5) major historical factors (social events / attitudes, wars,
laws, economy, political environment, etc.) in the past 50 to 100 years that have
contributed to the current issue(s) and problems for this topic area.
3. Analyze three to five (3-5) major current issues / problems (economic, social,
political, legal, etc.).
4. Describe one to two (1-2) people affected by the issue / problem, including two to
three (2-3) quotes and / or paraphrased comments from the person(s) (from your reliable
sources).
5. Propose two to three (2-3) changes (economic, social, political, legal, etc.) that
could possibly improve the situation. (Changes can be proposed and extracted from
examples from other countries, localities, or workplaces that you found in your reliable
sources.)
6. Include three to five (3-5) credible and reliable references in addition to the
textbook.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
· Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch
margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA. The assignment must be
submitted as a Microsoft Word document. Check with your professor for any additional
instructions.
· Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the
professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are
not included in the required page length.

is not counted in page length for this assignment.)
2. Analyze two to three (2-3) likely challenges (economic, social, political, legal, etc.)
to achieving the proposed change(s).
3. Provide a logical response to each of the challenges.
4. Analyze two to three (2-3) possible benefits (economic, social, political, legal, etc.)
that could be realized following the proposed change(s).
5. Provide a summary of the articles you have written that includes a quote, question,
and / or statistic, along with a call for readers to respond by taking some specific action.
6. Include five to seven (5-7) credible and reliable references in addition to the
textbook. (Three sources can be the same as the ones used in Part 1. The others must be
new sources.)

As described in the assignments, the articles were to be written as if you were an
investigative reporter who has been assigned to research important issues (ethnic, racial,
or gender) that are affecting people in a local area, workplace, or a specific part of the
world. The articles are for a major publication (magazine or newspaper). Your goal was
to provide both an in-depth analysis and put a human face on this issue with the series of
articles. After publication, your editor has asked that you provide a summary in a
PowerPoint presentation for a meeting of the National Association of Journalists so the
members can determine if the series should win one of its top-three prizes for
investigative reporting.
On-ground students will present their summary in week 10 and week 11 if needed.
Online students will share their summary presentation in week 10 through a threaded
discussion.
Develop a ten to twelve (10-12) slide PowerPoint presentation in which you:
1. Introduce the topic area with a quote, question, and / or statistic with an overview
and a thesis statement. (Grab the audience’s interest.)
2. Highlight three to five (3-5) major historical factors (social events / attitudes, wars,
laws, economy, political environment, etc.) in the past 50 to 100 years that have
contributed to the current issue(s) / problems for this topic area.

(photographs, charts, and / or graphs.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
· Format the PowerPoint presentation with headings on each slide and three to four
(3-4) relevant graphics (photographs, graphs, clip art, etc.), ensuring that the presentation
is visually appealing and readable from 18 feet away; references must follow APA.
Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
· Include an introductory slide containing the title of the assignment, the student’s
name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover slide and the
reference page are not included in the required slide length.
· Follow these directions for submitting the PowerPoint:
· Submit your PowerPoint to the Week 10 Course Project dropbox (or other area
designated by your professor.)
· Post your PowerPoint to the PowerPoint Activity Assignment link and provide a
short introduction.
· Review at least one (1) other classmate’s PowerPoint Presentation and post a
response indicating what you learned by identifying two (2) specific points that were
made in the presentation.
