Risk activities in adolescents are a pervasive and costly problem for all societies, despite many efforts to reduce or prevent these through diverse intervention programmes. This presentation seeks to unpack what the leading adolescent risk behaviours are, why these occur, and what strategies have been successfully tried and tested to mitigate negative behaviours.
Through the examination of strategies to build resilience in young people (historically an educational intervention), Ms Houghton will argue that by shifting our focus from ‘negative’ aspects of risk and focusing on skills development opportunities with young people, young people will be better able to manage their lives, including risk situations.
Examples will be drawn primarily from an HIV/sexual health perspective for the purpose of discussion and debate. Participants will be encouraged to share experiences of successes and challenges.

In the past few years, more studies about poor mental health in academia have been conducted and found that PhD students are almost 3 times as likely to develop mental health problems than then general population. While studies have not been conducted yet on postdoctoral researchers, anecdotal evidence has shown similar concern about mental health on blogs such as Chronically Academic, and others. Topics often linked with poor mental health are work-life balance, job demands, long work hours, supervisor’s leadership, and financial concerns. Many of these these stressors are often exacerbated for those with an underrepresented identity with the addition of factors such as stereotype threat, imposter syndrome, or microaggressions. I will discuss the challenges that lead to poor mental health for early career physicists as well as some possible solutions that can be implemented by individuals and the community.

As electricity is difficult to store, it is crucial to strictly maintain the balance between production and consumption. The integration of intermittent renewable energies into the production mix has made the management of the balance more complex. However, access to near real-time data and communication with consumers via smart meters suggest demand response. Specifically, sending signals would encourage users to adjust their consumption according to the production of electricity. The algorithms used to select these signals must learn consumer reactions and optimize them while balancing exploration and exploitation. Various sequential or reinforcement learning approaches are being considered.
Online violence amplifies IRL discriminations, and the lack of diversity grows in a vicious circle. Understanding cyber-violence, its forms and mechanisms, can help us fight back. To process massive volumes of data, AI finally comes into play for good.

Nour and Maria present the work they did at Tweag, Modus Create innovation arm, where the GenAI team developed an evaluation framework for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems. RAG systems provide an easy and low-cost way to extend the knowledge of Large Language Models (LLMs) but measuring their performance is not an easy task.
The presentation will review existing evaluation frameworks, ranging from those based on the traditional ML approach of using groundtruth datasets, including Tweag's, to those that use LLMs to compute evaluation metrics.
It will also delve into the practical implementation of Tweag's chatbot over two distinct documents datasets and provide insights on chunking, embedding and how open source and commercial LLMs compare.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
