One Choice Can Change Every Thing
A 13 year-old girl loses 30 pounds by joining C.H.O.I.C.E.S.
ATLANTA – When Brittnee Hampshire cried to her mother after being bullied in school for her
weight, Brittnee’s mom, Jessica Hampshire, knew she needed a different choice for her
daughter and a different method, other than exercise, to lose weight.
“I was bullied since elementary school and I didn’t understand,” Brittnee said. “I am involved in
sports and I am always exercising but I can’t seem to lose weight so that my classmates will
stop making fun of me for being bigger than them”.
Brittnee has struggled her whole life with weight gain. “I have seen her run her butt off and stay
active five out of the seven days of the week,” Jessica said. “When she came home crying, I
had enough and knew that I needed to help her so I turned to C.H.O.I.C.E.S”.
Mrs. Hampshire selected The Center Helping Obesity In Children End Successfully, Inc.
(C.H.O.I.C.E.S.) because of their mission to provide parent and child resources for the at-risk
children of obesity while promoting weight management and lifestyle changes through nutrition
education, peer socialization, physical activity and community involvement.
“At C.H.O.I.C.E.S. I was able to learn the importance of a balanced diet and I felt comfortable
being around peers that understood me,” Brittnee said. “I was building my own self confidence
and I was using what I learned at the center to make better choices at home and at school.”
After only four months of being with the center, Brittnee Hampshire had lost 30 pounds.
“We felt confident that we could boost Brittnee’s self-esteem and self-worth,” Executive Director
Vanetta Keyes said. “We focus on making healthier food options and surrounding these children
with people who inspire and mentor them along the way.”
Not only did Mrs. Keyes and the staff at C.H.O.I.C.E.S. inspire Brittnee and her mother to make
better lifestyle choices, but the children Brittnee’s age also provided support and friendship.
“After a few short meetings and visits, I could see the shift in my daughter and she was back to
her happy self again. Brittnee was able to lose 30 pounds with her new lifestyle change and it
certainly has grown on me,” Jessica said. “Now, as a family, we walk together, play more
2. outdoor games and make healthier food options thanks to the lessons we have learned at
C.H.O.I.C.E.S”.
