The purpose of a resumé is not to get you the job; the purpose is to get you an interview.
A well-written resumé is an essential component of your job search - it serves as a marketing tool to make
a positive first impression and for you to secure an interview.
The average resumé is given 10 – 30 seconds to make an impression on the reader.
Resumés should be:
Short and easy to read ( 2-3 pages max)
Interesting to look at - not too crowded with information; have standard-sized margins, appropriate
font size - white spaces actually increase readability
Focused to match your career goal/job to which you are applying
A resumé is a reflection of the individual who it belongs to - there are many different ways to
capture the required information.
Keep your resumé brief and relevant
Present yourself proactively and accurately
Use strong action verbs
Use the same tense throughout the entire resumé
Once you’ve accomplished something, it’s in the past. Keeping the tense consistent to the past tense
makes it more readable for the employer. We’ve used headings to reflect your areas of experience. If you
have other headings that more accurately provide this information, revise accordingly. When you are
applying to positions, re-arrange the information to make it reflect what the employer needs. It is also
helpful to edit your language to match what is in the job description or advertisement. Often you can be
saying the same thing and because you are using different words, your experience may not be
appropriately recognized.
A combination format is used to bring your experience to the forefront. What you’ve done is more
important than where you did it.
