3. About Ri-Bhoi District Meghalaya
• Ri Bhoi District is one of the 11 Districts of Meghalaya
• Carved out from the erstwhile East Khasi Hills District on 4th June 1992
• It is bounded in the North by the Kamrup District of Assam, East by the
Karbi Anglong District of Assam, South by the East Khasi Hills and West
by the West Khasi Hills District.
• The Headquarter of the District is at Nongpoh located at 53 km away
from the state capital Shillong and 50 km from Guwahati.
• The District lies between 90°55’15 to 91°16’ latitude and 25°40’ to 25°21’
longitude.
• Population of 1,92,795 (2001 Census) & cover total Areas of 2448 sq.kms
5. People and Culture
• The Bhois of Ri Bhoi District are the Sub - group of the main Khasi Tribe.
• The majority of the Bhois speak the Bhoi dialect, although they use the
Khasi dialect as a major subject in their schools.
• In Ri Bhoi District, there are other groups of tribes.
• viz, Garos, who speak the Tibeto - Burman groups of language.
• The Karbis, Marngars, Mikirs, Bodos and Lalungs use Assamese as
their Lingua Franca.
• Some speak and write Khasi too.
• The Bhois follow the matrilineal system.
• Children bear the title of the mother and she is the safe keeper of all
properties owned by her parents.
• It geographically comprises parts of the Khasi kingdoms viz parts of
Mylliem Syiemship, Khyrim Syiemship, Nongspung Syiemship, Nongkhlaw
Syiemship, whole of Nongpoh Sirdarship (erstwhile Nongpoh Syiemship),
Myrdon Sirdarship and the erstwhile Nongwah Syiemship.

8. Dances
• One of the very popular dance of Bhois is the “Ka Shad Sajer”
• It is a ceremonial dance held annually at Nongbah (Raid Nongpoh) by Ka Seng
Pynneh Riti Khat-ar Lyngdoh.
• Usually held in the last part of January.
• Neighbouring zillas also used to take part in this dance.
• Shad Sajer is more or less like a Festival of the Ri Bhoi District.

10. Interesting facts about Ri-Bhoi & Its
People
• An insect Chremistica Ribhoi ‘Niangtaser’ known as worldcup insect found
only in Ribhoi district only during the football world cup season i.e only
once in a 5 years.
• Cooking of Rice ,Meat,and other type of local veg (colacasia esculenta) in a
Bamboo are still in practices in Bhoi ( Ja tyndong).

12. Conclusion
The Bhois, they are part of the sub-tribe of Khasi, and have the
very common in nature, and the cultural practices which are all the same,
they are also known as Khasi a tribal of Meghalaya state, share a common
customs and practices ,Tradition ,Culture as well .
