1. INDUSTRIAL PIPING DESIGN
Brief Outline
December 2007
This training program is designed to provide a fundamental education in industrial piping design. It is
structured in logical order to first cover piping fundamentals along with an understanding of codes and
standards. Pipe works covers the basics of pipe, fittings, and in-line devices. Pipe fabrication and
installation is then explained for the designer to better understand how pipe is constructed both in the
shop and at the job site.
The program then progresses with pipe supports and stress analysis. This section contains information
on the different support types, spacing, and accommodating pipe stress in a piping system.
The heart of the training course continues with system design. Descriptions of various process systems,
the associated equipment, contiguous structures, and the development of a plant layout are discussed.
The course then continues on to site surveying; where safety at the job site is emphasized. This section
explains several different field measuring techniques and the requirement of field sketches.
The final topic involves the evolution of a project and drawing documentation. Explained is the
progression of drawings and the types of documents required for designs to be built.
In the end, the knowledge, skills, and field capabilities attained through this training program provides a
solid foundation necessary for designing industrial piping systems.
