The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago located 972 km off the coast of Ecuador consisting of 13 large volcanic islands and smaller islands and islets known for their unique flora and fauna. Administratively, the islands are a province of Ecuador whose capital is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The Galapagos Islands are famous for their numerous endemic species and inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, with tourists calling them the "Enchanted Islands" to see plants and animals found nowhere else in the world.
