Many people use the terms “goals” and “objectives” interchangeably when it comes to finance.
While the two terms are related, they are quite different--and good financial planners recognize the
difference between them.

Financial goals are broad and focused on the future. They may include “retiring comfortably” or
“buying a home”. Clear goals are essential for all financial plans, but they do not include the steps
needed to achieve a desired end result. Successful financial plans also have a well-defined
sequence of actions, or financial objectives, for the short and medium term.

Financial objectives are specific and measurable: They are the steps necessary for accomplishing
financial goals, and usually include a specific milestone that individuals hope to reach within a
defined period of time. Clear financial objectives could be “setting aside $20,000 each year” and
“retiring in January 2025 with $2 million in savings”. These objectives would help track progress
toward the broader goal of “retiring comfortably”.
