1. Below is my individual ecological footprint in 3 times horizon as per https://www.footprintcalculator.org/home/en
Mission Life and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 both focus on promoting sustainable consumption and
production patterns. Here are two key points about Mission Life and SDG 12:
1. Reducing Waste and Promoting Recycling:
Both Mission Life and SDG 12 emphasize the importance of reducing waste generation and promoting
recycling. This includes efforts to minimize the use of disposable and non-recyclable materials, such as
single-use plastics, and to encourage the reuse and recycling of products and materials.
2. Responsible Consumption and Production:
Both initiatives call for responsible consumption and production practices. This involves making
informed choices about what we buy and consume, considering the environmental and social impacts of
our choices, and supporting sustainable and ethical production processes.
Following are the themes of Mission Life, as per this I would change my lifestyle or reduce my ecologic footprint by
half and become net zero in terms of carbon
1. Save Energy
1. Unplug and power down – when not in use, I will unplug electronics and chargers.
2. Use of LED Lighting, Will start using Smart power strips and Energy star appliances. On my next purchase of
microwave, refrigerator, washing machine, I will make sure the BEE star rating
3. Installation of Tankless Water Heater – which heats water on demand
4. Renewable energy source- the main challenge is easy of availability in the market.
5. Use Energy Efficient Windows – Skills person will be required to install such windows. Either old windows
need to be energy efficient or new windows to be installed
6. Replace the bike with EV Bike – I have a plan to do it, but Initial cost is high.
7. Use of public transport like Metros and local trains – Mumbai will have metro network with better
connectivity within coming 4-5 years. Prefer trains over car or flights for inter-city travel.
Challenge in the Train is ticket availability, so I prefer Car or flights.
8. Buy locally fruits and vegetables to reduce emissions from freight movement
Common Challenge – Initial One time Cost is involved and change of habits will have to be gradually
2. Save Water
1. Reduce Water usage – Regular Fix leaks and shorter showers and installation of low flow tap.
2. I am the secretary of the society and will initiate a Rainwater harvesting in my society. Cost can be a
resistance for implementation, but this could be manageable by educating a member and recovering a cost
through society maintenance over a period.
3. Educate my Family: Educate my family members about the importance of water conservation and
encourage them to adopt water-saving habits.
4. Use a Broom: Instead of hosing down driveways, sidewalks, and decks twice a week, I had introduced a
practice of washing a premised through water only once a month. This can save a substantial amount of
water.
3. Say No to single Use Plastic
Ecological footprint
global hectares or gha
Carbon footprint
CO2 emissions in tonnes per year
Carbon footprint
% of your total Ecological Footprint
5 years back 7.9 16.5 72
Present 10 21.6 74
Future 6.9 14.4 72
2. 1. Educate yourself, family and others- I will stay informed about environment impact of single plastic and
share this knowledge with friends and family. We should point out others directly, about single plastic usage
2. Buy in Bulk – I will have start implementing a practice of buy a product in bulk to reduce plastic packaging
waste.
3. Carry Re-usable shopping bags, use of re-usable water bottles, bringing my own utensils to avoid disposable
plastics.
4. Set my personal goals - Without challenging myself and having healthy competition in the family, it will be
slow progress. I will start one at a time and will track my progress accordingly
5. Indian Bureaucracy – Policies are made, and bans are imposed, but then also execution is poor from
Municipal corporation due to lack of will power and corruption.
4. Adopt Sustainable Food Systems
1. Buy Organic and Non-GMO: Opt for organic and non-genetically modified (GMO) foods, when possible, as
these tend to have fewer chemical inputs and promote biodiversity.
2. Choose Sustainable Packaging: Look for food products with eco-friendly packaging and bring your reusable
bags and containers to stores and restaurants.
3. Reduce Food Waste: Plan meals, use leftovers, and store food properly to minimize waste. Composting is an
eco-friendly way to dispose of food scraps.
4. Reduce Dairy Consumption: Plant-based diets generally have a lower environmental footprint. As I am
vegetarian, so reducing dairy consumption will be difficult for me and my family. Will have to find
alternatives for plant-based foods which is calcium and protein richer.
5. Reduce Fast Food Consumption: Limit the consumption of fast food, which often relies on resource-
intensive, unsustainable production practices.
5. Reduce Waste and E-Waste
1. It starts from awareness and mentality of not generating a waste, instead of thinking that how to dispose a
waste. There is concept of 5R’s which I will start following over a period
Refuse- say no to unnecessary items, Reduce – limit consumption, Reuse- use items multiple times, recycle-
when possible, Rot – compost organic waste
2. Pack a Zero waste lunch – user reusable lunch containers, cloth napkins, use of cloth instead of aluminum
foul to pack a Chapati.
3. Repair instead of replace- Extend the life of my belongings, to fix broken items with minimal packaging and
buy in larger size
4. Participate in Cleanup Efforts: Join or organize community cleanup events to remove litter and waste from
public spaces.
5. Extend the Lifespan of Electronics, Purchase Durable Electronics, Donate or Sell Unwanted Electronics,
Participate in E-Waste Collection Events, Minimize Accessories
6. I am part of RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), we connect with many NGOS and do collect E waste and
promote cloth bags.
Challenge- We start doing it at initial phase, but then tends to normalize with regular routine. If we really need to bring
an impact, we should start with waste reduction goals and challenge ourselves and track our progress.
6. Reduce Waste
1. Balanced Diet – Limit the consumption of fast foods, and eat of variety of whole foods. We have started
consumption of millet based in our normal diet
2. Regular exercise and adequate amount of sleep
3. Mindful eating - Avoid emotional eating and eat what is required and when it is required.
4. Limit Screen time –
Reduce or limiting screen time for television, computer, and mobile devices, especially before bedtime.
Challenge
3. This is my wish list, but because of working in IT industry and USA shift, it is difficult to do so and if the work
load is more.
Do corporations measure and report their environmental /ecological footprints?
1. PwC has environmental policy to achieve following
• Measuring and taking action to reduce the carbon footprint of our business activities, including energy
consumption pertaining to our facilities and business travel
• Managing waste generated from our business operations according to the principles of reduce, re-use and
recycle
• Communicating the importance of environmental issues to our people and motivating them to embed
environmental responsibility in our work culture
• Continuously improving our environmental performance in the areas of energy, waste, transportation and
employee engagement
• Establishing environmental governance leadership and implementation teams
2. PwC road to Net Zero
In 2020, PwC India joined PwC network firms in a commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions by 2030. PwC’s net zero commitment is underpinned by a science-based target to reduce its emissions
to a 50% absolute reduction of its scope 1 and 2 emissions as well as a 50% absolute reduction in scope 3
business travel greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 as compared to our 2019 levels.
3. As a professional services firm, our carbon emissions rely heavily on business travel and consumption of energy
in our offices across locations. In order to mitigate the carbon impact and create a circular economy, PwC is
collectively undertaking structural and behavioral shifts supported by design thinking principles to achieve our
2030 Net zero agenda. The sectors PwC is working across include:
3.1 Travel: Encourage PwC Employees to engage in conscious responsible travel practices and reduce non-
essential travel. These include investing and supporting digital collaborations, replacing air- travel with surface
travel wherever possible, exploring local resourcing to mitigate travel necessities. This encompasses updating its
travel policies and collaborating with PwC clients, people and stakeholders to drive down its carbon footprint.
3.2 Energy: PwC is working towards transitioning to renewable energy sources across its offices and pivoting
towards EV vehicles to lower our carbon emissions. In the process, PwC is planning to procure substantial energy
in their offices from renewable sources, leveraging the use of motion sensors and LED lighting to reduce
electricity consumption.
3.3 Behavioral change: PwC looped in Consulting team from Advisory line of services for assessment of travel
behaviors and building the net zero communications and adoption journey towards Responsible Travel.
