2. Many IoT-centered films strike an equilibrium
between the fantastical and the possible,
begging an important question: are IoT-based
movies intended to be escapism, a reflection of
our technological achievement, or a cautionary
tale?
Here are three movies that implement how IoT
can (and might) be used, and the lessons we
can take away from such depictions.
3. "Skyfall" (2014)
As a recent film in the long standing 007 series, “Skyfall’s” distinguishes itself from its
predecessors by following a plot heavily rooted in modern technology, namely IoT and
cyberterrorism.
“Skyfall” carries an undercurrent of connected tech’s destructive potential, and these
examinations should be kept in mind as we work to maximize IoT’s benefits, and only its
benefits.
4. "The Fate of the Furious" (2017)
“The Fate of the Furious” dedicates several of its biggest scenes to actions heavily
rooted in IoT. Specifically, one of the film’s scenes involves the mass hacking of
multiple cars, which are used to block a politician’s motorcade.
If “The Fate of the Furious” teaches us anything about IoT, it is that we must be
increasingly careful with our vehicles as they grow “smarter."
5. "Terminator" (1984-present)
The entire Terminator franchise is centered on Skynet, a fictional global intelligence
system that spawns legions of independent cyborgs capable of overthrowing
mankind. It is easy to draw eerie parallels between Skynet and the fundamentals of
“smart cities.”
Though self-reliant killer robots may be a far cry from our actual technological future,
it is safe to argue that “Terminator” successfully predicted the basic premise of
massive IoT concepts that are now very real.
