Maternal knowledge regarding vaccination in India was assessed. Key findings include:
- Over half of mothers were only aware of two vaccines - BCG and OPV. Knowledge of other vaccines was poor.
- The most commonly known advantage of vaccination reported by 56% of mothers was that their child would not become disabled.
- About 10% of mothers were not aware of any vaccination centers. Hospitals, Anganwadis and Balwadis were the most commonly known centers.
- Education level, source of knowledge like schools and health personnel, and mass campaigns influence maternal awareness, highlighting the need for improved immunization programs and health education outreach.
