Sebastian Cohnen – Building a Startup with NoSQL At StormForger we use several NoSQL systems to handle all kinds of different data. We have a lot of time series data based on the fact, that we do load testing and performance analysis of HTTP-based infrastructure and services. For time series data, we use InfluxDB. We also use several Redis instances for caching and storing structured data, that needs to be fast on read and write access. Lately we also started to integrate ArangoDB into our architecture, which is a perfect fit for storing and working with our complex test case definition data structures. In this talk I’d like to present how we build our startup on the foundation provided by several NoSQL databases, how we came to choose those systems and how we use them.

Proud to have graduated from the University of Amsterdam MSc Information Studies program in Data Science, this was my final msc thesis presentation on my defense last July. The thesis answers to the contemporary complex problem of popularity prediction, which is highly discussed but not yet solved. An effort for optimizing feature engineering, using several regression models and answering to the question of "what makes a post popular" according to its content e.g. action, scene, people, animals etc., taking advantage in the meantime both computer vision techniques and text processing, is the summary of this work. My MSc Thesis was marked unanimously with 8/10 - one of the highest grades in UvA Informatics department - and was submitted for a publication in MMM2018 24th International Conference on Multimedia Modeling (Thailand, Bangkok).

Deep Learning has shown a tremendous success, yet it often requires a lot of effort to leverage its power. Existing Deep Learning frameworks require writing a lot of code to work with a model, let alone in a distributed manner. In this talk, we’ll survey the state of Deep Learning at scale, and where we introduce the Deep Learning Pipelines, a new open-source package for Apache Spark. This package simplifies Deep Learning in three major ways: • It has a simple API that integrates well with enterprise Machine Learning pipelines. • It automatically scales out common Deep Learning patterns, thanks to Spark. • It enables exposing Deep Learning models through the familiar Spark APIs, such as MLlib and Spark SQL. In this talk, we will look at a complex problem of image classification, using Deep Learning and Spark. Using Deep Learning Pipelines, we will show: • how to build deep learning models in a few lines of code; • how to scale common tasks like transfer learning and prediction; and • how to publish models in Spark SQL.
