ROY’S ANECDOTE
Roy is a 25 year old secretary who works out everyday. She swims for an
hour every morning and tries to run 3 miles often 4 miles at lunch
eluding post nutrition. Her weekends are devoted to long distance
intense cycling. She skips her regular social gathering of friends on
weekends.
Even after her injured shoulder and sored calf muscles she goes on
continuous training to improve her sprints.
Friends complaint about her irritable and exasperated behavior.

ABSTRACT
With growing awareness of healthcare and obsession towards physical
exercises people are committing themselves for optimum fitness, workout
sessions and other dietary trends. This positive obstinacy for fitness and
exercise after transcending the brim of positive health flows down to reflect
adversely on once physical and mental health. In this session we will learn
about EXERCISE ABUSE, and the chemicals and phenomena responsible for its
addiction. Some severe disorders following exercise abuse as ANOREXIA,
BULIMIA and BODY DISMORPHIC DISORDER are explained hereby. This
study aware about the common symptoms when an exercise enthusiast end up
himself addicting to workouts and what can be the diagnostic sense of exercise
abuse.

EXERCISE ABUSE
 Exercise abuse is a compulsive disorder in which a person feels
the uncontrollable need to exercise excessively, it goes beyond
simple enjoyment of exercise and often result in injury or
illness.
 Exercise abuse is an unhealthy obsession
with physical fitness and exercise.

WHAT CAUSES EXERCISE ABUSE ?
 Exercise addiction usually starts with a desire for physical fitness and
transcends the positive line.
 Exercise releases endorphins and dopamine. These are the same
neurotransmitters released during drug use. An exercise addict feels
rewarded and joy w exercising.
 Addicts who exercise constantly will begin to have a higher tolerance
threshold, meaning the individual will have to train longer and harder
to achieve an effect that was once felt through less exercise.

ARE YOU AN EXERCISE ADDICT ?
 Experiencing uncontrollable desire to exercise.
 Feeling buzzed after exercising.
 Reducing activities in other important areas of life to make time for
exercise.
 Spending long periods of time preparing for, and recovering from
exercise.
 Experiencing an inability to stick with a reduced exercise routine.
There are no specific diagnostic criteria to use for exercise abuse diagnosis. Increased
fitness obsession and decreased social activity commonly indicates exercise
addiction.

Ask your self the following questions
1. Do you feel guilty if a day goes by when you don’t work out?
2. Are you putting more time on your workouts and not improving and not even enjoying it?
3. Are you ignoring aspect of your work, social life or family life in order to put your workouts
first?
4. Do you feel a compulsion to workout even if you feel tired? Is your exercise routine a source
of stress?
5. Do you suffer from insomnia, fatigue, lethargy, irritability, loss of mensural periods,
multiple chronic injuries.
6. Are you annoyed of people in social gatherings and feels obnoxious all the time except
workouts?

  • 5. WHAT CAUSES EXERCISE ABUSE ?  Exercise addiction usually starts with a desire for physical fitness and transcends the positive line.  Exercise releases endorphins and dopamine. These are the same neurotransmitters released during drug use.
