5. INTRODUCTION
Technology plays an increasingly vital role in our daily lives and
many people constantly strive to own the latest gadgets. But what
happens to the devices once they are no longer updated?...
ELECTRONIC WASTE IS A TERM FOR ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS
THAT HAVE BECOME UNWANTED, OBSOLETE, AND HAVE
ESSENTIALLY REACHED THE END OF THEIR USEFUL LIFE.
technology advances at such a high rate, many electronic devices become
“trash” after a years of use. E-waste is created from anything electronic:
computers, TVs, monitors, cell phones, fax machines, printers, etc; and its
Improper disposal of e-waste is a recycling opportunity lost. These materials
might be trace elements, but when added up in volume,
the threat to the environment is significant.
6. NEED OF THE STATEMENT
It is extremely important to REUSE E-WASTE for the betterment of the
environment and health. but it is suffering strong resistance from the society
and is not implemented because it is time consuming, high cost and lack of
technology. Recycling is more commonly done than reusing e waste .
Therefore, to cover a milestone in sustainable development, it is
imperative to make and reuse E-waste on a mainstream basis. So by
reusing the collected E-waste from my society and not sending it for
recycling , I have created a smart baby cradle using e-waste. My project is
utility driven where I am using electronic parts out of discarded electronic
items and also have spread awareness amongst people by taking surveys
and conducting workshops.
7. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
• ANALYSIS OF E-WASTE PROBLEM IN MY SOCIETY.
• CONVERTING E-WASTE FROM USELESS TO USEFUL,REUSE IT AT OUR HOME
EVEN BEFORE RECYCLING.
• FROM JUST DECORATION TO USING E WASTE AS A UTILITARIAN PRODUCT
WAS OUR AIM OF THIS PROJECT
• MAKE A BABY FRIENDLY CRADLE WITH UTMOST USE OF OLD ELECTRONIC
APPLIANCES.
• STUDY IN DEPTH ABOUT E WASTE AND ITS RECYCLING VS REUSING.
• CREATE AWARENESS IN PUBLIC ABOUT THE SERIOUS PROBLEM OF E-WASTE.
8. RESEARCH DATA

10. • It is estimated that 50 million tons of e-waste
will be generated globally in 2018.
• Out of this, only 20 per cent of global e-
waste is recycled each year, which means
that 40 million tones of e-waste is either
placed in landfill, burned or illegally traded
and treated in a sub-standard way.

TYPES OF EWASTE
11. Types of E-waste produced and their records of
their produce in different countries in the year 2017
and total production from the year 2010 to 2017.
Almost all electronic waste contains some form of
recyclable material, including plastic, glass and
metals but we don’t recycle it.
“The world’s e-waste problem continues to grow.
Improved measurement of e-waste is essential to set
and monitor targets, and identify policies,”
commented Jakob Rhyner, Vice-Rector of the United
Nations University.

HOW MUCH OF IT IS REUSED??
THOUGH ENOUGH DATA IS THERE ON RECYCLING ,COULD NOT FIND MUCH DATA ON
REUSE OF E WASTE
13. THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF E-WASTE.
1. Biotic –
i. Electronic devices are rapidly filling the landfills of the globe resulting in addition of harmful
elements to the environment such as lead, zinc, barium, chromium, mercury etc.
ii. Guiyu in China is known as the largest e-waste recycling site in the world, and the city’s residents exhibit substantial digestive,
neurological, respiratory, and bone problems. 80 percent of Guiyu’s children experience respiratory ailments, and are especially at
risk of lead poisoning because of their informal working conditions, poverty, and poor sanitation.
14. 2. Abiotic –
i. When e-waste is warmed up, toxic chemicals are released into the air damaging the atmosphere. The
damage to the atmosphere is one of the biggest environmental impacts from e-waste, adds to the
carbon foot print.
ii. When electronic waste is thrown away in landfills their toxic materials seep into groundwater or the
sources of water, affecting both land and sea animals.
iii. The land gets polluted since the toxic chemicals from e-waste enter the “soil-crop-food pathway,” one
of the most significant routes for heavy metals exposure to humans. These chemicals are not
biodegradable—they persist in the environment for long periods of time, increasing exposure risk.
• Only 10 % of cell phones are recycled AND PEOPLE get new cell phones every 12 to 18 months. This is creating more electronic waste and with the lack
of responsible recycling, the environmental issues of e-waste are increasing.
16. THE ELEMENTS RELEASED BY DUMPING E-WASTE AND THEIR EFFECTS ON HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT
SOURCE: WHO(WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION)

ENVIRONMENT OR
HEALTH
1 Chromium • It is a common element in
electronics due to its ability to
prevent corrosion and the
increase conductivity of
electrical impulses..
• It is commonly found in data
tapes and floppy disks.
One form of this element in
particular can damage the
body’s DNA and irritate the
mucous membranes.
2 Lead
It is seen in CRT screens,
batteries, printed wiring boards,
etc.
Lead exposure has long been
shown to cause severe
impairments in children and
multisystem breakdown in
adults.
17. 3
Polyvinyl chloride PVC plastics make up the
electronic devices and computer
accessories from keyboards to
speakers to cable insulation
• When burnt, PVC can release
chlorine gas.
• When this gas is mixes with
water, hydrochloric acid forms
which leads to respiratory
distress.
4
Americium 241 Smoke detectors and some medical
equipment contain this element
whose isotopes are both toxic and
radioactive.
----------------------------------
5
Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Used primarily in cooling units and
insulation foam.
They effect the ozone layer.
6
Mercury It is often used found in devices such
as switches, batteries and
fluorescent lamps.
They will cause mental and
cognitive issues, brain fog, skin
issues, kidneys get impaired etc.
7
Brominated flame retardants It is found in most electronic
devices.
Since they are toxic and difficult
to break down in the
environment they can effect the
human health.
18. REUSE VS RECYCLYING OF EWASTE
REUSE RECYCLE
Meaning Reuse, means putting an item to
same or a different use, after it has
fulfilled its original function.
Recycle is a process, wherein a used
item is turned into a new product, to
reduce waste of potentially useful
material.
Form Does not change the original form of
the product.
A new product is created, so form of
product is changed.
Harm to environment It does not harm environment, in any
way.
It sometimes causes harm to
environment.
Energy Saves energy Consumes a little amount of energy,
but saves it too.
19.
20. CHALLENGES OF RECYCLING
• The inadequate management of electronics recycling in developing
countries has led to various health and environmental problems.
• Less valuable materials Although the volume of e-waste is increasing
rapidly, the quality of e-waste is decreasing. Devices are getting smaller
and smaller containing less precious metal. The material values of
many end-of-life electronic and electrical devices have therefore fallen
sharply.
• Electronics recyclers have also suffered due to sagging global prices of
recycled commodities, which have decreased margins and resulted in
business closures.
• Most E-waste still goes To landfills

24. METHODOLOGY
CHOICE OF THIS PROJECT OF REUSING E-WASTE : I realized that at my house a lot of E-
waste was being generated and on research the improper disposal of that waste had many ill
effects not only on the environment but also human health and wanted to save my environment
from getting ruined by creating something innovative out that waste collected.
IDENTIFICATION AND ACTION RESEARCH OF THE PROJECT: I started to research deeply on
my project.
Then I made survey sheets on GOOGLE FORMS and also designed my own website to
spread awareness and analyzed the forms .
I then went to collect the E-waste from my society .
I studied on how e waste was recycled and also spoke to a few recycling units about it like
ECORECO PVT LTD. I realized that the whole process was very tedious .
25. SURVEY PROBLEM TO QUANTIFY
E-WASTE
The forms were deigned in Google forms and shared to all to quantify and understand the
problem of e waste in masses.

29. After the survey analysis I inferred that people dispose a lot of e-waste and are also interested to
use it again,
Thus then came up with an idea of reusing it myself and thought of making a smart baby cradle
made out of the waste resources collected and with the help of my electronic sir designed and
made a working model of it.
THE SMART BABY CRADLE IS A DEVICE WHICH IS DESIGNED AND MADE IN SUCH A
WAY SUCH THAT THE PARENTS CAN EASILY MONITOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THEIR BABY,
COMMUNICATE WITH THEM AND KEEP THEM SAFE.
The cradle has four basic modules that are –
• Emergency light and fan
• Intercom
• Bed wetting
• Baby tracker

31. DETAILS OF EACH MODULE
Module 1- Emergency light and fan
This module will function like an inverter in the absence of power supply with a
difference:
There is a fan and light in the baby room which will start functioning in the absence of the
main power supply. These are attached to a battery. The fan starts when the power goes
off but the light will switch ON only when it is totally dark. This is because of the use of
LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) which lets the circuit close and thus light the led only
when there is total darkness in the room.
Resistance of LDR is maximum when DAY and lowest during NIGHT .
We have also used a rectifier which converts AC to DC which is been produced from
batteries.
32. Module 2: Intercom
It is a communication system between the parent and the baby. In this we have used
speakers from the computer speaker and mouth piece or microphone of old telephone
hand sets. It includes a set of speaker and microphone attached to the baby’s cradle and
a similar set in the area where the parent is. In a situation where the baby is alone and
sleeping, say wakes up and starts crying the parent can be alerted at the other end
through the sound which is transmitted through the transmitter.
Module 3 - Bed Wetting Alarm
Here a moisture sensor/water level indicator is attached to the baby’s bed. As soon as
the bed gets wet an alarm in the form of a light sensor and a sound sensor is set off
alerting the mother.
Here LED lights and a buzzer from an old electronic toy has been used.
33. Module 4- Baby activity tracker
Range control system which indicates if the baby has fallen off the cradle or crossed the
range of the bed room. An alarm which has been used from an old remote control car will
alert the parent about the safety of the baby.
CIRCUITS OF THE FOUR MODULES MADE
34. TO CREATE AWARENESS
A WORKSHOP WAS CONDUCTED AT SPIRITUAL TOUCH A CHILDREN WELFARE
ORGANIZATION IN WHICH I DISCUSSED :
ABOUT THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF IMPROPER DISPOSAL OF ELECTRONIC
WASTE
THE IMPORTANCE OF RECYCLING THEM
EXPLAINED MY SMART BABY CRADLE TO THEM
ALSO ASKED THEM TO GIVE THEIR VIEWS ON THE OBSERVED PROBLEM.
35. FUTURE PROSPECTS
Along with these ideas we have a number of other prospects for the future that are :
1. Include use of more renewable energy like attaching solar panels to the LED AND FAN,
use of magnets from other electronic appliances to make a solenoid, dynamo which can be
used as source of energy instead of batteries as batteries itself are an E-waste which would
not be recycled.
2. Making a baby safety and security app for mobiles which could be used as an activity tracker.
3. The present tracker is a little cumbersome to be carried so I plan to make a wearable tracker
which is more user friendly.
4. I also plan to make an automated rocking system of the cradle using AI.
5. Make an adjustable range between the tracker(on the baby) and the cradle.
36. FUTURE PROSPECTS
• I HOPE TO COLLECT MORE SUCH E WASTE AND MAKE SUCH MORE BUT A LITTLE MORE
SOPHISTICATED UTILITY PRODUCTS .
• I HOPE I CAN SPREAD MORE AWARENESS AMONG MASSES AND INTEND TO DO MORE
WORKSHOPS AT MY SCHOOL AND PUBLIC PLACES.
• INVOLVE MORE PEOPLE IN THIS .I HAVE DESIGNED A WEBSITE WITH THE HELP OF MY
BROTHER(AADITYA) FOR THE SAME AND INTEND TO START WORKING ON THE PROJECT
SOON .(https://ushmapunatar.wixsite.com/erasite)
37. CONCLUSION
• As technology brings a whole new world of advancement it also brings around the
horror of E-WASTE and its effects
• I inferred that e waste can be reused into a utilitarian product ,thus can reduce the
load sent for recycling too.
• Recycling is a very lengthy procedure ,reusing is simpler and can be even done at
home.
• Very small step of reducing, reusing it ,can make a big difference to our world ,today
we have taken our first step but there are miles to go before we sleep…...
