Mir Nihal
Mir Nihal is the central character of the novel.Ahmed
Ali highlighted
The attitude of patriarchal society in Delhi through his
descriptive method of portraying the character of Mir Nihal.
Throughout the novel males are portrayed as moral weaklings,
especially the character Mir Nihal.
Begum Nihal
The wife of Mir Nihal who takes decision of
Asghar’s marriage against Mir Nihal, she always remains
thoughtful of returning her husband at home. She is nearly sixty
years old. She becomes blind. She tried to convince Mir Nihal for

Asghar is the second most important character of the
novel, young son of Mir Nihal, who likes the Modern British
fashion and ways. Unlike his father Mir Nihal, he belongs to the
young generation of India, represent the Muslim Indian culture
but in his own way. He seems revolutionary in approach and
intention.
Babban Jan
Babban is the dancer and prostitute girl in the
novel. Babban Jan is the most important personality in Mir
Nihal’s life. She is love of Mir Nihal and he buys her a house to
live there. Her death cause a loneliness for Mir Nihal.

6. Mushtari Bai
Mushtari Bai is the most important personality in
Asghar’s life. She is the first love of Asghar. She is dancer. She
use tricks to give pleasure and satisfaction to Asghar. She is the
cause of the death of Bilqueece because Bilqueece was unable to
satisfy Asghar.
Bilqueece
The wife of Asghar. She is respective and innocent
girl belongs to lower class family. She was grown up in little bit
religious context. She never came up forward in style, she
always remained in her culture.

7.  Zohra
A young sister of Bilqueece and third love of Asghar. She lives with her
sister Bilqueece.After the death of her sister she takes care of her niece, she
finally agrees to be in love with Asghar and writes him a letter to go for
wedding on the day of her marriage.
Summary of Novel Part (4)
Chapter1
By the middle of summer of the year 1918 the war has turned the
world into a world of dead. Besides the ongoing massacre of the armed force,
The civilian especially Muslims suffered more such as air raids, epidemic
caused by unhygienic condition of the populated area. During the war
condition of Delhi Muslim were facing difficulty in burying the dead bodies of
their love one’s. They were unable to find even a yard to bury the bodies.

8. Chapter2
capter2 shows that Belqueece is suffering from influenza
her mother begum shahbaz is unable to take care to Belqueece
and also can’t handle the households that’s why Begum Nihal
sends Masroor and Dilchain to stay at Asghar and help him
looking after Bilqueece.One night around 4o’clock Asghar ask for
apologize and Bilqueece advice him to look after Jehan Ara and
passed away.
Chapter3
Chapter three depicts the situation and condition of
Asghar after the death of his wife Bilqueece he is so sad and
tired of being taking care of his child.
