diet, the types of fats you choose are important for your heart
health. To get a good balance of fats, aim to reduce your
intake of bad fats and boost your intake of good fats.

Choosing the right type of fat is important because it has
a major influence on heart health. Put simply, fats can be
divided into two groups: ‘good’ and ‘bad’.
‘Good’ fats include
• Polyunsaturated fats and are found in foods like oily
fish, walnuts and certain plant oils such as sunflower
oil and spreads made from them.
• Monounsaturated fats are found in foods like olive oil,
canola oil, peanuts, almonds and avocados.
• Polyunsaturated fats (and to a lesser extent,
monounsaturated fats) may help maintain your heart
health.
• The essential fats - omega 3 and omega 6 are good
polyunsaturated fats.
• They are called essential because they cannot be
made by the body and you need to get them from the
food you eat.
‘Bad’ fats include
• Saturated and Trans-fats which are bad for your heart
health.
• Saturated fats can be found in foods like butter,
full-fat dairy, cream, sausages and other fatty meats,
as well as some take aways such as pizza and snacks
like potato chips.
• Trans-fats are found naturally in small amounts in meat
and dairy, but the main sources are found in foods like
pre-packaged cakes, doughnuts, biscuits and pastries
and some take aways (which also tend to contain
saturated fat).
