A goal of the UW Potato Breeding Program is to develop genetically superior High Yield, Yield: High, similar or higher than Dark Red Norland
chip potato cultivars that satisfy or exceed the standard for yield and grade Attractive skin color, very uniform tubers with good market appeal. W8886-3R (W2303-8R x B1491-5R) W8893-1R
for the red, yellow and specialty markets. Very uniform tuber size, shallow eyes Early Bulking. As early as Norland (W1101R x Dakota Rose )
Maybe resistant to heat and drought. Later maturity than Dark Red Norland Nice color & smooth Nice uniform red color
Each year parental lines with desired traits are crossed and progenies are
evaluated for fresh market and processing traits, emphasizing early selection
evaluation in Central WI and other environments
Objectives:
• Development of fresh market and storage red clones as alternatives Norland and
Dark Red Norland.
• Development of fresh market and storage yellows clones as alternatives to Yukon
Gold.
• Development of specialty clones to contribute to the offer of varieties adapted to
WI growing and storage conditions within this category.
W8405-1R(Kankan x W2303-9R)
Attractive round oval red clone. Can maintain color in storage
Breeding and Selection Methods Very high yield potential. Later maturity than Norland. Specialty Clones
Shallow eyes. Good internal quality, lacking of internal defects. There are many different potato types that may be considered

• Early Selection: in field year 1-2 clones are evaluated for fresh market or
processing traits at Rhinelander ARS.
• Year 3-5: Clones are more intensively evaluated for agronomic, disease,
fresh market and processing potential at various locations: Hancock ARS,
Rhinelander ARS and out of WI.
• Year 6+: Evaluation in WI (HARS, RARS, Antigo) regional, national trials
and some locations in Canada (MB, ON, NB): Agronomic performance and
processing traits.
• Selection of specialty potatoes are intended to be performed with W6703-1Y (Satina x W2275-2Y)
