5/2/14
Name: Brandon Behlke, Tyler Dornink, Megan Johnson, Brigit Kyle, Patrick Reichling
 Goals:
o Students will learn the causes of the Civil War
 Objectives:
o Students will be able to list reasons for the causes of the Civil War (B.12.1)
o Students should be able to reason why the reasons caused the Civil War (B.12.2
and B.12.15)
 Procedure:
o Introduce the word wall that will be used throughout the unit. Students will put
up words that they do not understand that they will learn the meaning to
o PAR:
 Preparation: The students will write a Quickwrite answering the question
of what they think caused the American Civil War into their discussion
web
 Assistance: Students will read their given selection of text and look for
evidence regarding if the Civil War was only caused by slavery. The
students will be paired up to fill in more information of what they learned
from the article. Then, when they are done they will get together with
another group and form a consensus.
 Reflection: Each student will write their individual answers down. Then,
each group will have a representative to share their consensus with the
class and there will be a grand conversation about what the groups think.
 Formative Assessment
o Walk around the classroom to check on the students’ work as they do their
discussion web to make sure they are on the right track
 Summative Assessment
o Write a simulated journal on the side of the Union or Confederate soldiers and
have them state their reasoning for fighting in the Civil War and why they think it
occurred
 State Standards:
o B.12.1 Explain different points of view on the same historical event, using data
gathered from various sources, such as letters, journals, diaries, newspapers,
government documents, and speeches.
o B.12.2 Analyze primary and secondary sources related to a historical question to
evaluate their relevance, make comparisons, integrate new information with prior
knowledge, and come to a reasoned conclusion.
o B.12.15 Identify a historical or contemporary event in which a person was forced
to take an ethical position, such as a decision to go to war, the impeachment of a
president, or a presidential pardon, and explain the issues involved.
 Materials:
o Civilwar.org article, PAR strategy, discussion web, word wall
