2. Introduction
As a graduate student at UCLA, Tunde Krasznai worked in the Gluck
Outreach Program. In this position, Tunde Krasznai provided music
therapy for individuals as a solo pianist in venues ranging from senior
living facilities to schools.
Over the years, research has confirmed a number of applications for
music therapy, such as treating depression. One of the perhaps-
surprising applications of music therapy is as a complementary
treatment for coronary heart disease. While music cannot treat the
condition outright, it can provide relief from symptoms and improve
outcomes.
Studies have shown that music therapy reduces both blood pressure
and heart rate. Systolic blood pressure can fall by as much as 5.5
mmHg in patients with coronary heart disease when exposed to music
therapy.
However, music therapy has more benefits than these physical ones.
Coronary heart disease can be exacerbated by anxiety and stress.
Music triggers the release of endorphins and dopamine, which combat
these emotions. Brain research has shown that music triggers the areas
that deal with anxiety and stress.
