Moshoeshoe was the founder of the Basotho Nation and lived from around 1786 to 1870. He received guidance from the wise man Mohlomi on how to effectively lead, which included choosing peace over war, taking wives from different clans, and not killing people accused of witchcraft. Moshoeshoe employed strategies like borrowing cattle to his subjects, forming marriage alliances between clans, allocating land, and paying tribute to stronger chiefs to avoid conflict as he successfully built and united the Basotho Nation.
